Bunny is flying out to NYC (United Airlines) – any tips?

Hi Everyone!

I just graduated, relocating from SF to NYC for work and bringing my bun with me. We are flying United (he’ll be under the seat in front of me in the cabin). I had a few questions:

– anyone have United approved carrier suggestions? I cannot use my hard kennel because the height is 12″. according to united:

The maximum dimensions for hard-sided kennels are 17.5 inches long x 12 inches wide x 7.5 inches high (44 cm x 30 cm x 19 cm). The maximum dimensions for soft-sided kennels are 18 inches long x 11 inches wide x 11 inches high (46 cm x 28 cm x 28 cm).

I am having a difficult time looking for hard-sided kennels that are 7.5 inches high, so I might just have to do with a soft-sided kennel. I am also on a college friendly budget… so I cannot afford anything over $60. I want the bun to be comfy during fly time but at the same time I cannot spend too much money on a carrier…

another question… if you have flown domestic on United, did you need a health clearance for your pet? I called United a few days ago and they had no idea. To get a health clearance, my vet said I had to pay $100+. So…. I just want to hear your opinions!

I have a carrier like that. It was used for our lizard. Wooly fit inside when he was little. How big is your bunny?

I don’t know anything about health clearances. I don’t know why a particular airline would require one. I would think it would be more like if you were going somewhere that restricted animals coming in and going out. Hawaii, for example, is rabies free and requires a health check of cats and dogs.

Thanks LBJ! He’s a dwarf hotot. I put a ruler by him and he measures 10 inches long.

Yeah, there is nothing on that page about health clearances. Someone just brought it up and my vet told me I should get one just in case.. Thank you!

I was going to suggest contacting your vet who may be familiar with what you need, but you’re way ahead of me. Have a good flight!

If I were flying with my buns I would get a health check just in case. It would be awful to get to the airport and not be allowed on your flight because you didn’t have that slip of paper just because one person said you didn’t need it. Better safe than sorry, right?

Maybe you could find a vet who will do it on your college friendly budget. it is the holidays after all

I guess I would feel more comfortable with a hard carrier. It sucks that it has to be so small. As long as he can turn around comfortably and lay down, I would think he would be okay. It’s so hard to tell though if you are ordering one online. I just know that Wooly fit in one like that when he was a baby. At the time he weighed like 1.5lbs, maybe less.
