Around the end of November/ beginning of December last year, my boy, Jaxon, started humping my female, Bundles. He hadn’t done this for the first couple of months I had him and was actually non confrontational. I originally brushed it off assuming that he was trying to establish his dominance and gain some ground in the family pecking order.

The three of us went home for winter break after my college semester ended and he seemed to calm down a bit. However, at the end of break, I noticed some of Bundles’s hair was missing. I figured she was eating it, because she has a bad habit of doing that, but it was odd that all of the missing hair was on her back.

Break ends and we go back up to school. Jax starts humping Bundles again, he has become even more relentless than last semester. Then today I saw him going after her, but when he mounted her he grabbed her hair and ripped it out when she tried to get away! He has been ripping out her hair!

I’m not sure what to do with him. He is a rescue so his medical history is uncertain. When I got him they had no clue if he was fixed or not. They were unable to find his jewels, I was unable to find them, and the vet that he went to was unable to find them. Still yet, he is behaving as if he is not altered. I know males can retract their parts. Could he be unaltered? I have checked him more times than I can count and haven’t found anything. Is there any other explanation? Is there any way to stop the behavior? I don’t want to split them up. They have a close bond and Bundles gets depressed with out another bunny. That’s why I got Jax. I am just not sure what to do. He is after her all the time and I just don’t know why.

It is possible his testicles never descended and they are in the abdominal cavity. Or he is intersex. It happens more often than people think.

Is the vet positive he is a boy? Sometimes things are a bit ambiguous down there. I suppose the only way to know for sure is for the vet to look inside. Unfortunately, that requires surgery.

I wonder if there is a way for them to test his hormone levels. Neutered males can still produce testosterone through their adrenal glands, just not as much.

Yes, he is definitely a boy. The vet, my mom, and I have all found his wee wee. We just can’t find his jewels. If they haven’t descended, is there something the vet can do to check for that? If that is the case, can he still be neutered?

It is possible to do a blood test, but your vet may not have a lab that can actually do it. It isn’t a standard/routine test.

You can do an abdominal neuter. Recovery-wise, it would be like a spay. Also keep in mind that both boys and girls have something that pops out and rabbit genitals can sometimes be ambiguous. If a vet were to do an exploratory surgery, they could do an abdominal neuter or a spay depending on what they find in there.

Yes Bundles is spayed. I had her done the summer before I got Jax.

My vet offered to do an ultrasound on him to see if they could find anything. He is scheduled to go in next Friday. Thank you for your help. Will keep updating.

That sounds like a good first step. Hopefully they can see something with an ultrasound. It can be difficult.
