Bunny Hopping .. How Fun It Is …

Hi i was asked to start this about bunny jumping .. your bunny will either love it or hate it !

My bunny Opal loves it but it took alot of hard work to get to where he is now .. the way i trained Opal is kinda wierd and i dont think alot of bunnies would take to it.

Basicly we started off doing tiny jumps about 5cms high so he could build confidence and i would figure out if he liked to do it or no and he decided he loved it!

We were slowly going higher getting a treat every time he jumped.

Next came jumps in a row .. it started off as 2 jumps in a row and then we got bigger and added more jumps.

Then after he jumped them i would click my fingers and he would come over to get his treat .. im still working on jumping without treats!

Its fun but its sort of a hobby rather than anything serious because there arnt any places near where i live to take it seriously

Anyone else wanna know more or have trained there bunny to do this ??

(also ive trained other tricks .. opal just picks up things so quickly)

… I also taught him to stand up, kiss, spin around, to walk on his harness and to go to his cage (although this hardly ever works )

Sounds like fun. I guess I don’t have the knack for that type training.  Cotton is scared of the clicker. HE thinks I am teasing him when I hold a food up for him to stand and take it. Ruby I have only introduced her to clicker once. I have to be consistent and I haven’t been.  I have been on youtube and google  and saw some agility jumping looks neat.

i have the clicker book and i started doing it with my mini rex but then we adopted a second bunny and we were bonding and i’ve lost momentum.

Opal lost interest for a while but now he realized theres treats in it hes all for it again

My bun doesn’t seem very lured into tricks by treats. I’ve tried what you described, but she just sniffs the air, and then decides it’s not worht the effort… I’m impressed you trained your bun so well!

I was working on training Kokanee then she got too sick and I didn’t want to give her treats; I think Ruperts going to be amazing he’s bright, but Kahlua will definitely be difficult-she’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer…Chuck is not getting trained, he’s retired

Furbaby, try withholding treats…spoiled bunnies don’t perform so well Make the only treats -training treats. You can get a lot of info on training online for free.
It’s similar to training a dog if you’ve ever done that, but sessions need to be shorter for shorter attention spans-AND only a couple treats because of their tummies Once you start you can feed leaves of oregano for training too!!

Here are some examples of what I have seen on YouTube.  Really neat to see, and it seems as if the bunnies are enjoying it.  Plus great exercise if a bunny is into it.

I always loved watching the first bunny in the first video… how after the hurdle she automatically stands on her hind legs and waits for her momma to pick her up. If only most bunnies could tolerate that! Haha

Some rabbits love it and others just aren’t interested. The trick is to keep them going. If they find one obsticle that they really love make them to that one last and then keep coming back to that one as a sort of reward. Radar loves the tunnel so we do that last and then I let her do it twice and Jo loves going over the bridge. Each of them like the jumps just fine. I’ve also found that if you let them run around and explore after you put the harness on, like a little warm up before the actual event then they’re more eager to listen. Get all of the exploring out of their system. Then another ten minutes at the end to explore. Remember that they’re not animals meant to work for a long time. Short bursts of energy. So if Opal gets tired and wants to kick out for a bit, let it happen. That’s your chance to work on targeting or just get some pets in.

Very interesting Erbear. Great info. So did you use clicker training to get them to actually jump, or because the bunnies that do this are “interested” do they do this on their own?

wow thats so awesome! some of those hurdles were pretty high! i love when an animal is trained purely through kindness, like when u can tell the animal is doing it because the owner has taught it with treats and praise and kindness, and not taught it by giving it a kick when it does something wrong, i think thats a lovely thing to see especially with rabbits as we all know they must be putting the hours in and its doubtful they are hutch bunnies.

Have you seen the one where one of the bunny’s pulls the slats out of the jump and goes through the middle instead of jumping over the whole thing – it’s hysterical!!!!!!
