Bunny health issue, out of idea

Hi everyone, I would have love to contact you a few months later with some good new but I don’t … My Maui is still sick, after more than a 1000$ spent on vet visits, I have no more energy, money or idea to what could cause my bunny health issue… We’ve litterly tried everything so I’m trying to ask you guys…

Basically a few months ago I did a few post here. My bunny was losing his fur, itching his ears a lot and being more distant than he used to. At first I tought of stress of changing home, than I brought him to the vet. Even tough she found nothing in his fur, she still treated hime with two dose of revolution, and he was being treated for an otitis.

Cameback to the vet, and the otitis was still there, so he got a second treatement for it, then this issue resolved itself.

As for the fur, I thing I overgrommed him with the furminator wich in consequence cause him to loose a lot of fur on his side.

Now a few months later, my bunny is itching more than ever. Licking a lot his side, itching his face a lot, his nose, ear, shaking his head, and often all his body like a wet dog would do.  The vet tought the revolution might not have been effective enough, so he’s been treated with 3 or 4 injections 2 weeks apart one another. The itching didn’t go away. She tough of fungus, but his fur his now really thick which would not happen with the fungus.

I sincerely don’t know what to do and my hearth break everdyday seing him like this. We also tried Benadryl, he seemed to be doing ok, but later in the day he seems to start scatching again. Maybe I should give him a dose in the morning and one in the afternoon ?

Other than allergies, we have no other idea, and my vet ask to 2 other vetenerians… Maybe detergent, soap but I don’t think it would cause him to itch this much…

On his face, I found like some weird yellow crust at the root of his fur at some places. He also look like the skin on his ear is really dry and chipping away. Thos are all the things I’ve found and looked.. Teeth look fine, he’s are “alright ish”, he has a white cloud in one eye which he had beeen treeated for but it did not disapear but did not get worse. Other than that I have no clue… Please help Maui …

Also, I’ve looked under his chin and it look wet and dirty, I don’t know why. I’ve also seen some green color in the fur near his mouth were he often itch, but it could always but the vegtables I’m guessing…

To me, it sound like he might be allergic to something like you mentioned. Have you kept him in the same room since you moved or is he free roam to different areas of the house? If he’s in the same room, maybe try switching him to a different room for a week to see if it helps. Or if he goes everywhere in the house, do you have a friends place he might be able to stay at for a few days to see if his itching improves?

Is it just the corners of his mouth?

Hmm… if the Benadryl seems to help, then maybe it is allergies. The dosage recommendation is 2mg/kg and it can be given every 12 hours, so I think you could do 2 doses per day if needed. The better solution would be to figure out what is causing the allergy. Oddly enough, some rabbits are actually allergic to timothy hay. Have you tried something different, like orchard grass?

The quick summary is that a tumor was likely growing and compromising the rabbit’s immune system, therefore, the fur symptoms were secondary to the actual cause of the problem.  If you’re able to, I’d do some imaging assessment work because it sounds like nothing like that has been done before. If treating what’s showing on the surface isn’t helping, then perhaps it’s worth looking beneath the surface instead.

Yes Maui is completely free roam

I’m the second owner of that bunny, before me, this bunny was waiting oxbow hay so maybe he’s allergic to the barn Timothy hay I’m feeding him …

He’s lost a bit of weight acording to my vet but nothing drastic … Really hoping it ain’t a tumor.

Do you guys recommend a certain detergent that would be maybe less strong for a potential allergy ?
