As far as his eye goes – does it look cut or just swollen or ??? Does he seem bothered by it right now?  It’s hard to know for sure if it is an infection or a scratch or what, so hard to know how to treat it.  You could put a cool or warm cloth to soothe, but as far as treating it, it would need to be seen by a vet.

If he doesn’t seem to be bothered at all by it right now, then I would take him to the vet tomorrow so they can give him some eyedrops and pain meds (if need be). Plus, they will be able to check if there an actual scratch on his eye.

            How is he today?
Were you able to get him to the vet? You can get his nails cut by a vet for about $15 or less, so if he eye is better you might want to just take him for a trim. You could mention that you brought him because you thought he’d scratched his own eye.

One of my buns has a recurring eye infection problem. I have been to the vet & gotten several different eyedrops. None of which did any better than the over counter human eye drops for pink eye. I don’t think I’m suppose to mention a brand name here but it is the one that say ear & eye drops. My bun gets a sort of a pimple up under her eye lid & once in a while I see a white discharge on her eye ball. This is because she broke the pimply thing open with her nail. It doesn’t seem to bother her, no extra scratching or anything. It has never spread to the other eye or her bonded friend. She did develope it soon after bonding with her friend but I’m the only one bothered by it. It clears up & comes back a month or 2 later. The pimply thing is only visiible if I gently pull back her eye lid, similar to how you would look for the loose eyelash that is bother your own eye.

It is not recommended to treat eye injuries with over the counter medications without the advice of a vet- some medications can inhibit healing and cause scarring depending on what is wrong with the eye.  Plus rabbits are sensitive to some antibiotics so you do not want to give something that the rabbit should not have.  Your vet needs to determine if there is an infection, swelling, cornea damage, etc before determining proper meds.  Eyes are a delicate organ and need special care to help ensure vision is not lost.

I had asked the vet about using these drops & she said it was fine to use but yes I agree only use something you know ifor sure is bunny safe & it’s always better to have a vet look at any injury.

I wasn’t able to take him to the vet , my mother bought some ointment for his eye, I don’t know what the heck it is… but it looks like it’s working . I took him to the groomers to get his nails trimmed. He doesn’t act like he’s in pain at all. My mom is very stubborn, but if he doesn’t get better I’m going to try my best to take him to the vet. I’m going to post pictures of my bun while I’m here. Thanks for the worries and suggestions.

Can you read what the the ointment is and post it?

I have a similar problem as KeyboardXD had. It looks like my bunny hurt his skin near his eye while scratching or for some other reason. I noticed a small speck of blood near his eye and what might be a minor tear but it is really hard to see. It doesn’t seem like any nerves or the eye itself was hit and it seems like a superficial wound but I rather be safe then sorry. It is really hard to see with the naked eye if there is a tear or just a puncture and I took a photo as best I could as he was very hyper during his play time.

                          And a higher resolution.

Should I just monitor for an infection and visit the vet only if there is one ?

I’d take your bun to the vet. My Monkey girl had an ulcer in each of her eyes caused by something poking them, and had I not had it treated, the vet had told me the ulcer would have made it so she would have lost her sight. Not something I’d want to risk.

Always have a vet fund set up for emergencies.

Is the eye itself red or only the corner of the eye?  Is the eye more watery than usual?  Bunnies are around hay and sometimes there are pokey bits and bunnies do not see well directly in front of them- so I am surprised there are not more bunnies that might accidentally poke their eyes on hay stalks.

Is this the bunny that had the ecollar on after surgery?  Because he might have been unable to groom his face which caused a small accumulation of debris (eye boogie) which is moist and it irritated the skin.

This probably sounds weird but I will “groom” my bunnies eyes for them- I lick my finger and wipe their eye (they will close it) and then gently check the corner for any debris- most bunnies typically have a tiny amount of “sleep”/debris in the corner of their eye.  At first they did not like this routine but now they seem to enjoy it- they probably think that I am being submissive to them and grooming them as a submissive bunny would.

Is it possible your other bunny could have scratched the eye??  Bunnies do tend to nip or “box” when they are not fully bonded.

I “groom” Mellows eyes with a damp paper towel and I wipe his eyes very gently. Sometimes, he gets an eye booger that is sticky.

Since it’s Sunday, I would groom the eyes with a warm damp cloth gently as was suggested and the watch it today. If it is the same or worse tomorrow, or not beginning to heal visibly, then call the vet.

Katnip, Sammy has always let me clean out her sleepies from her eyes, often several times a day. She pulls away until she realizes that that’s why I am reaching for her, then comes over and holds still so I can get it. It seems that most bunnies love to let their slaves do this for them.

The eye is not damaged, it is the skin near the tear duct (if he was a human it would be on the side of the nose) and its superficial. It still looked a bit pinkish yesterday but it is healing and today it seems almost healed. Its just a bit hard to tell because I doubt I would have even noticed it at first if it wasn’t for the red speck. I could not take him to the vet next day because I was “playing” lumberjack at our vineyard all day and then came the holidays, now I don’t have a car for the next two days. Because it was superficial and the position I didn’t think it was worth driving him 30 minutes each way depending on traffic (but a vet trip does improve his litter habits for a day or two ) and paying a premium. But I will still keep looking at it for a few days making sure its healed.

Its hard to say what might have caused it. It might have been a nail when he was grooming himself or he hit something when he was running around and doing binkis. I try to keep his play area as safe as possible but when he is all hyper and running like a mad bunny I’m not sure even a padded room would be a safe place for him . I’m quite sure it wasn’t the lack of grooming when he had his collar since it came off permanently two weeks before this not to mention that on the third day he took it off in the middle of the night by himself and later he had it off during most of the day when I was watching him.
