Bunny guarding baby

My bunny, Moonpaw, is really settling in and his personality is starting to show, and he’s developing some characteristics that I didn’t expect and find pretty quirky.  One of them is how much interest he has in my kids (I would assume kids would be too noisy and erratic for a bunny, but this does not seem to be the case), but especially my 4 month old baby.  Moonpaw pretty much always sleeps beside the baby’s bouncer when he’s in it and I had just chalked that up to it being a good place to hide, but now that the baby is getting a lot more floor time the bunny is always by him, especially when he starts to fuss.  I had the baby on the floor as I was making breakfast and he started fussing and Moonpaw rushed over.  He licked his head a few times, then kept switching directions like he was on the look out or something.  It looked to me like he was “protecting” the baby, but I don’t know if that’s the kind of things bunnies do.  Am I just reading too much into it?  I apologize for the blurry pictures, it was dark and I didn’t want to get close enough to frighten Moonpaw away.

Rabbits tend to see their humans as part of their warren, so it wouldn’t surprise me at all that he’s treating your baby like a group member who must be protected. The bond between rabbits and humans can become quite strong: our bun seeks me out when I’m in pain. He licks the painful spots and sometimes he keeps me down on the couch by standing on my hand. We call him nurse bunny at those times.
He also needs to be part of the fun: if my BF is here he’ll follow us around the living room. When we’re cuddling we’ll soon feel a little nudge at our ankles. Ahem, I want to join the cuddle pile! He’ll also position himself in such a way that he can see all people in the room and copy what we do. One of his latest discoveries is that blankets are awesome, and he has taught me the signal for when he wants to be wrapped into one.

Awww……cute!!!

My bunnies, whom have both sadly passed on, when Everly was a baby (she’s 4 now) were very interested and spent lots of time with her as well. I think they liked that she was always on the floor at their level. Olivia (pictured) used to chin her head and her toes. It was so adorable. And Bindi would often lay down right beside her.

Bunnies just continue to amaze me! I am constantly discovering new things about them and the way they interact with people. When we first got ours I really expected them to be interesting to watch, but didn’t expect the bonds they form with people. I’ve officially been converted, haha, I am definitely a bunny person.

These are the ABC’s of a bunny owner’s life:

– Abandoning all hope of ever having a clean house, accepting that having a bunny means that your house will always look like a stable.
– Being extatic about finally seeing your sick bunny poop, and needing to tell that to all your bunny-loving friends who will chant the “Yay, POOP!” song with you.
– Crises needing vet attention will always occur at night, on weekends, or on feast days. A day which is all three combined scores bonus points in the bunny book of records.

Ditto that. When I first got a bunny, some 15 years ago or more, I assumed they were like hamsters and guinea pigs but I was amazed at how much personality they have! And how loving they can be. Took my first bunny like 2 weeks to turn me from a normal person to a “bunny person.”

Yep….our’s ninja mind controlled us into adopting her from the neighbors across the street. She was able to convert us from “normal world” to “bunny world” before she even lived with us.

Those are very heartwarming pictures by the way. Pictures like that I have to go back and look at again and again. Just adorable. I wouldn’t mind perusing a thread specifically for such baby/bunny pics…..hint, hint…..

This pic popped up the other day in my FB Memories so I thought I’d share. This was Bindi’s first time meeting Evi. I introduced him first because he was like a teddy bear, very easy going and calm. I have very fond memories looking at this picture.

BINDI! I sure was and am drawn to Bindi. Big time. He looks so fluffy. Like a sheep and bunny combined. He was something I’m sure. Such a precious picture.
