I think Pinky may be having some gas this morning. After I fed their veggies, I put Pinky’s pellets in the carrier so he would go in and I could clean his pen. The carrier was beside me as I was cleaning and I smelled a weird odour a couple times, not great smelling… It was brief each times so I thought maybe Pinky was farting ? I feed both bunnies once a day, pellets and veggies in the morning. I’m thinking maybe it’s because I’ve been giving them a little kale everyday? I was going to stop tomorrow since I was just using up a couple leaves I picked. I have only been giving them about 1×1 inch piece everyday in their salads. I also give them romaine, red leaf, green leaf, and basil. Should I just stop the kale and see if he stops having gas?

It’s the evening now, I was just brushing him because he’s shedding a lot and he’s still gassy. I read that gas is a sign of gi stasis. But I offered him a few pellets as a treat because I was using them to get Muffin to come up on my lap. He ate them. Do bunnies still eat during gi stasis?

My initial thought is passing gas or there was cecotrope production and eating happening. I sometimes nap next to Fable and my oh my… the smell is ripe.

It is actually positive that gas is being passed. GI stasis is when the GI system is literally stopped, or in stasis! If gas is being released, that’s a sign that things are moving. Without getting to illustrative, imagine the difference between being gassy and not being able to… fart… and then being gassy and releasing that gas, whether it’s by burping or going to the bathroom. The former is a pretty uncomfortable state and means things are blocked up, while the latter means things are moving around.

Not eating is a hallmark sign of bunny bad news, so if there is eating, it is a great sign. Pooping is even better because, again, it’s a sign that things are NOT in stasis.

Unless you’re seeing consistent, worrying signs of major gas build up, I wouldn’t worry about veggie content at this point.
