        Dear All.

        Hi, its Olly Rabbit.

My Mummy and Daddy want to make a small ‘Rabbit Only’ garden when I go to the new house, like herbs and veg, do you have any ideas what they could plant for me? I know we will have Mint, what is easy to grow? Also how do we keep cats and foxes away so they don’t dig things up? They can walk through at night but not touch, Daddy said there are plants that keep them away but which ones?

Thank you love from Olly xx

Not sure about plants that deter cats and foxes, but dandelion, sow thistle, plantain, basil, cilantro, fennel, and lettuces are all very popular and easy to grow (some of them are considered weeds!).

Tall fencing is really the only thing that will keep out animals. I have read that allium will keep away cats, but I have no idea if it’s true. It’s a flower that’s in the onion family. There are some different animal repellents sold in stores, but I don’t know if they are safe to use around food crops. In catalogs, I’ve seen gadgets that hook up to a hose and will spray animals with water that come near. I guess they are motion activated.

If you grow mint, plant it in a pot, otherwise it will creep and take over the garden.

Besides the plants mentioned, you could try kale, parsley, chard, dill, and carrots. You may not get carrots of any size, but you will get the fresh green tops, which are so nice for rabbits.

Some other easy to grow things are silverbeet/Swiss chard, calendula marigolds (do not plant african/there marigolds), parsley (I like parsley because it self seeds well), oregano, lavender, orchard grass
