my bunny has been with me for about a year now, and I’ve always kept them in areas fairly close to the kitchen (living room, dining room, etc). she doesn’t freak out at the microwave, TV, people, or even the vacuum. for some reason, however, when I turn the stove on she freaks out and stomps and hides. I thought it was the smell of food at first, but there’s times where I’m simply boiling a pot of water and she reacts this way. today she freaked out so bad she got stuck between the bars of her playpen, poor thing. luckily she’s okay but I was wondering if anyone knows why she’s acting this way or if you’ve had similar experiences.

My Moose freaks out whenever I am cooking. He does NOT like the sound of sizzling, or even water boiling. I guess he thinks I am getting ready to make Moosie Stew. Poor little man.

I know alot of bunnies greatly dislike the smells from cooking, maybe our buns are just a bit more sensitive to the sounds instead.

Lolli always hides whenever I’m in the kitchen cause she doesn’t like it when I’m cooking either. Doesn’t matter if i’m just doing dishes, she’ll still hide. Eddie was the same way. I also just figured maybe it’s their better hearing or sense of smell. The sounds and smells just get to them more or something.

Franz sits on my toes and weaves through my legs when I cook. I guess he follows me everywhere though lol. Until a few days ago I accidentally put oil and then worcestershire sauce on top and the oil splattered everywhere and scared the crap out of him. He stayed on the perimiter of the kitchen for almost two days lol but he’s back to normal lol.

glad to know she’s not the only one! it’s weird though because up until I moved into my new apartment (in July) she never had problems like this. is there anything you guys do to prevent it or help them calm down? I feel so bad and I’m terrified she’ll have another accident like she did today.

Maybe there’s a smell that she can sense when the element is on? Is it gas or electric?

I’m not sure what you could do to help here other than moving them elsewhere before you cook. Distract them with something?

it’s electric.. I think I’ll try putting up a screen or something between the living room and kitchen. thanks for all your help guys!

I actually feel horrible whenever I am cooking hamburgers because I feel like I’m being the predator that she expects me to be. Thankfully I keep her in a different room than the kitchen and I just close the divider door when this happens.
Does you stove click at all when you turn on the burner? Is there an open flame? Is there a fan that kicks on over the stove? If even boiling water disturbs her than it can’t be the smell of food itself so I’d pay attention to noise.

Maybe your bunnies have seen Fatal Attraction! I don’t think I would like the stove if I were a bunny when that scene happened in the movie either!

@anneNjoerule there’s no clicking or flame, since the stove is electric. it’s so odd. I know they have better hearing than us but I seriously can’t hear the slightest hint of a noise when it turns on! I even tried to turn the tv on to cover up the noise or distract them, but it still doesn’t work. I guess I’ll have to do what you do and get a dividing door

@HatterBunny I haven’t seen the movie.. but I’m kind of scared to now. haha

Maybe your rabbit is sensitive to the electromagnetic field that an electric stove puts out. Something as silly as that could be it. Small prey animals pick up on many different things that we would never think about and sometimes one of their detectors is set to maximum due to a genetic hiccup.

My Maryann has roughly a 70% success rate in predicting earthquakes above a 2.5.
