first subject, does anyone know of a good material to spread on the floor of a bunny playpen, like a rubber mat or tarp or something so they don’t scratch up the carpet and so i can clean it every once in a while?

second subject, does anyone who has a bunny from babyhood notice the bunny’s coat getting darker as they mature? Nova hasn’t (he’s black, can’t get any darker than that!).  Luna was white with a little grey tinge (picture below) and now a year later, looks like someone dumped a bucket of soot on her. she’s still a cutie tho but i didnt think she would get so dark. and her forhead got dark so it kind of looks like she has unibrow sometimes. lol

        1. baby picture from the day i brought them home. yup i was snapp happy from day 1. just call me the bunny paparazzi.

        2. picture of the two of them hanging out the other day. it looks like she’s chewing on his ear, but i assure you it must have been pleasant as he was enjoying it. =D

flooring is going to depend on your bunnies.  some people use linoleum, carpet remnants, rugs, tarps covered with a sheet.  do your rabbits eat carpeting?  some rabbits pull up carpet and then leave the fibers in a pile (like Meadow)… other rabbits chew them up and swallow them down.  if they are actually ingesting the fibers, this can cause a blockage as i’m sure you’re aware.  linoleum is good b/c it’s waterproof, but it’s also very slippery.  you would maybe want to have some mats or small rugs to go over the top.  and you always need to be careful of what is in the bunnies space b/c they can find a way to eat most everything.

she wasn’t a baby when i got her, but i’ve noticed that Meadow’s grayness has turned more black over the time i’ve had her.  she’s looking more and more like a cow everyday.

My first rabbit Bunbun, was a sable colored rabbit – I suppose he was young when I got him (not sure how old since he was a stray). When I first got him he had darker sable points and his body was lighter but as he got older he was all sable – he was such a gorgeous rabbit. So I know it can happen.

              Cute bunnies!!

I use linoleum/lino/vinyl flooring for my summer house in which four of my bunnies live. It’s relatively cheap and easy to clean. The summerhouse is heated so the floor is always relatively warm, and I found that it wasn’t as slippery as wooden flooring on which Teddy wouldn’t step foot on. He doesn’t have a problem with the linoleum, and the texture of it means that it is easier for them to grip on so can still do some running around! I do also have some carpeted mats down and levels off the ground with vetbed on. Just be sure that the edge are outside of the pen rather than inside as they do like to chew it to pieces!!

I use a blue plastic tarp or a canvas dropcloth to cover the wood floor and give the buns some traction.  The dropcloth is good because accidents can easily be dealt with in the washing machine.  They sometimes try to eat the canvas, though.  The tarp is also easy to clean, and waterproof so it protects the floor.  They chew holesin these occasionally, but they don’t eat them.

one thing to think about with coloring, is that different seasons can bring in different colored coats too

My bunny has gotten lighter as he’s gotten older… His bands of dark fur got darker, but his tummy is almost completely white now! I think he gets a little lighter in the wintertime, but the seasons don’t exactly change in San Diego…

wow! what a difference in the 2 picts. I have no experience with our lop since he was 2 when we got him in october and we’ve only had Riley for a couple weeks and he’s 3months. It reminds me of Dalmation dogs, how they are white at birth and get their spots as they get older.

I found an old square mat, the kind you put under desks for rolling chairs. is that safe for buns?

What type of mat is it? Is it one of those clear mats with the pokey things on the bottom? Or something else? If its a plastic type mat, I’d say its great for protecting the carpet, but some bunnies don’t get the best traction on those, and I’d recommend placing some carpet mats on top of it. I generally recommend going to Big Lots or Target to pick up some cheap rugs – or you can usually find some great finds as far as cheap rugs at the Salvation Army, just give them a good cleaning!

I have a pair of buns that are the EXACT same color as yours! Martin even has the dot on his nose just like Nova! The only difference is my Nilla Bean (who looks like Luna) is a netherland dwarf with teeny little ears. She was much lighter when we first got her, but was a rescue from an outdoor dump situation so she may have been bleached from the sun.

its a mat i got from Ikea. it doesn’t have the nubs on the bottom, you just lay it down and it stays put. i think area rugs would be good, those ones with the rubber traction on the underside so they don’t get pushed around otherwise i’ll come back and it’ll be halfway across the room. >.<

if you use this foam flooring, you want to be really careful.  i’ve heard of buns chewing that up in no time at all, and you may not know if they are ingesting some of it.
