So my foster bun Sierra had a bad fall this morning in our second room.  She tried to jump from somewhere about waist-height, and I tried to pick her up, and unfortunately she fell on her face/back.

I’m having trouble deciding if I should bring her to the vet, as weirdly, she’s acting fine.  She kept exploring the second room and seemed excited to eat her veggies as always.  She always seems fine eating pellets.  Immediately after she fell, I thought she looked like she was doing a weird chewing moment for a minute, so I assumed she might have a tooth injury, but I don’t see any indication of that right now.

Should I bring her in to the vet anyway?  If not, what should I look for as other warning signs she is not okay?

I would monitor for any weird movements, sounds, or health-related behavior changes (poop, pee, energy, posture, appetite) for the next couple hours before deciding the vet is not needed. It can take a bit for a rabbit to feel secure and show what might be some issues.

Be vigilant about her body and see if you’re able to notice any swelling over time. This will indicate an internal injury somewhere. Maybe get a good feel and photos of her now to so you can compare in a bit.

I agree that I would monitor for a bit more, and try to be sneaky about it so she doesn’t feel hovered over. As prey animals rabbits hide their injuries very well!

The safest thing would be to bring her in (worst case she gets a check up), but you might be able to give the vet better info with a bit more monitoring.

(Also, isn’t it wild how buns can injure themselves doing seemingly nothing, but then handle a fall like nothing happened??)

Thank you Wick & Fable and Dana!  And agreed Dana, it’s so frustrating!  Sierra is still acting fine, and even did a flop about 2 hours after the fall so I am optimistic.  But I will continue to monitor very closely, and maybe I will bring her in tomorrow or the day after, since she needs to have her nails cut soon as well.  There is only 1 vet in the shelter who is rabbit-savvy though (from my understanding), so I am reluctant believing a non-rabbit savvy would catch anything.
