hi my Mini Rex bunny is 1 year, 3 months old, not neutered. I’ve never seen him hump or ejaculate before. In fact she doesn’t display any territorial behaviors aside from peeing in front of his litter box sometimes.

He was flopped over and I was petting him. It looked like he was mostly asleep. Then all of a sudden he sat up and went into the position he usually does to eat cecotropes (he often wakes up during naps to do this). But instead some white milky fluid came out and he lapped it up immediately. Then he was cleaning his penis thoroughly.

Could this be ejaculate? I’ve looked online and it seems like another possibility is mucus stool, but my bunny is not having any G.I. problems (knock on wood) and has always been a healthy boy with good poop. He eats plenty of hay and limited pellets and greens. Plus wouldn’t mucus usually be a little bit yellowish? This was  pure white. I also think a bunny wouldn’t be enthusiastic about eating mucus, but what do I know?

Is there variation in how ejaculate looks? I was expecting it to be thicker. It was like 1 or 2% milk, if I had to guess, and was only about a mL or two.

Since BB does not allow posting about intentional breeding, many users are not familiar with what rabbit ejaculate looks like… Including me.

I’d say continue to monitor and if everything else health wise and behavior wise are normal, I wouldn’t be overly concerned. If it happens again, I’d call a rabbit savvy vet who may have insight. Any colored discharge (white, yellow, green) can still be indications of infection if not better explained by something else.

Thanks for the reply, Wick & Fable.

I’m leaning toward semen as upon further recollection, it shot out in a few spurts a short distance onto the blanket. This makes me wonder if bunnies have wet dreams.

Also, I’m posting the link below for posterity:

            https://www.scirp.org/journal/paperinformation.aspx?paperid=99223#:~:text=They%20all%20reported%20that%20the,in%20buck%20selection%20for%20breeding.

“normal semen is white, homogeneous and opalescent. According to [65], the colour of rabbit semen is white with the intensity dependent on the concentration of the sperm.”
