        Hi!

My rabbit seems to eat everything I give him.  He eats cardboard tubes, pumice stones, wood(safe and untreated, not pine or cedar), everything!  I observe him eat toys and I see that he doesn’t shred or spit out anything, which makes me worried and I take it away.  At the moment he has an ecotrition snak shack in his cage which is edible.  I am really worried that he won’t file his teeth down well enough.  Also, I have one more dilemma – I would like to build a cage with a few stories myself. His cage right now has three hops across and he can stand all the way up(which I’ve heard is the thumbnail for rabbit cages) but I want it to be better.  Anyway, the cage I would make would most likely have to have some wood for the flooring that I would want to cover with bedding of some sort, then have some type of blanket on the other side of his cage with his litterbox.  Also I wouldn’t want him to be kicking bedding everywhere, so I would want to have some wood border so the bedding wouldn’t get out.  And with stories in a cage comes ramps up to that story, and I would plan to put wood ramps.  I feel like he would totally see the wood as a chewing oppurtunity and 1 ruin the ramps,  2 consume that wood.  That would not be good.

Basically, is there anything I can do to have him stop chewing on everything, then eating it?  Chewing everything wouldn’t be such a big deal if he wouldn’t be eating it.  Still I don’t want to put some scent he doesn’t like like lemon or something on his toys which he would need to file his teeth down.  And if I were to put a bad scent on the ramps when I make a homemade cage, won’t he want to not use them and defeat the whole purpose of the cage?

And some background info on him – he’s approx. 10 months old, not neutered yet (in Dec. he will be), male, and eats 3/4 of a cup of Oxbow Adult rabbit food.  He also has veggies often and fruit as a treat, with Oxbow treats sometimes too.  He eats 2 Oxbow Digestive Supplements a day.

        Thank you!

Bunnies like to chew everything. It’s perfectly normal. It is also totally fine for them to eat wood but eating too much cardboard could be a concern. I also don’t know about pumice stones at all. Doesn’t seem like something that would be bunny safe in my mind but maybe someone will tell me differently. Also, bunnies should be given unlimited hay (is he getting any? You didn’t mention it as a part his diet) which is what actually keeps their teeth nice and trim.

There’s tons of info in the habitat section about caging options and building your own so you could definitely pull some ideas form there and probably find ideas to hinder them from eating their home. However, many bunnies don’t like bedding in their cages at all and it is unnecessary if they are litter box trained.

The pumice stone is by superpet, it had wood things on it but I was worried about it with my rabbit so I gave it to my gerbils who happily shredded the wood.
Oh I forgot that too! He has a hay rack full of Oxbow Timothy hay and sometimes has Botanical, Orchard Grass, Oat and only about once a month, a tiny bit of Alfalfa.
Oh really? I didn’t know about the bedding.

Thank you for all your help!
