        Does anyone have one?

I want to make one for my rabbits and one for my cats. Summer tends to make me worry with all the thunder storms, hurricanes, etc. so I want to put one together to have handy just in case.

What should I put in it? Any tips on the cat one would be great too.

Also, does anyone have a plan in case of evacuation, fire, etc? I don’t know what I would do with my pets in an emergency because most emergency shelters don’t accept pets.

After a spate of wildfires a few years ago, we at The Haven prepared a document about how to react to an emergency.  You can read it on our webiste:

I hope very much you get spared downeast, LPT. I heard they are expecting a mean hurricane season. Good idea to make such a kit.

“Knocking on wood”, the hurricanes usually die down to the point that they are not very destructive by the time they get here but you never know. Better to be prepared.

I’ve had a disaster preparedness kit or plan for a number of years now, ever since we had those 6 (at least) hurricanes in 2004-2006 here in FL. I had just moved here, so it was a staple of our summer life for a couple of years. I had Spockie at the time.

I had my parent’s house as the designated shelter inland from wherever my apt. was, so first, I left his old, starter cage in their spare closet or porch. I would unfold it and clean out the plastic bottom. It was the perfect size for him to stay in. Now I have a carrier for Sammy, but no spare cage, so not as happy without one.
Took a duffle gym bag with his stuff in it as a separate suitcase to my own prep. bags.
In his: a clean, smaller but big enough litter pan. One unopened smaller bag of litter. (compression makes a lot and it travels best unopened yet.)
A small bag of his pellets OR a plastic tupperware type covered container of pellets.
A small, unopened bag of hay.
                A roll of paper towels.
Several rolled garbage bags. Good for used litter, or to put the opened bags of stuff into later.
Any medications he’s ever needed, in his case, his eye cream. I used Petromalt, so brought that too. Maybe Simethicone.
A closable small container for water and water bottle(s).
If you’re evacuating, you should be taking large water bottles and a cooler or lunch bag with frozen cold things for both of you.
A towel, or washcloth, or favorite soft bed for him to snuggle, lie on, or use to keep warm and dry.
Closed jar of treats. A favorite toy.
You can try to take some fresh veggies, but in an emergency power goes out and spoiling happens easily, so know that your bunny is just fine with hay and pellets and water only. Much easier to transport.
Business card of my vet in case of emergency if the phones still work.
It will be hot during a hurricane, so if you can have a battery operated fan for yourself, you can cool the air around your bunny without blowing it on him directly. The washcloth can be cooled with tap water or bottled water and used to wrap his ears to cool him.

I think that’s it. I should get mine ready now for Sammy.
The bag for yourself is another story, but I won’t do that now. Too long an answer, right?
