Hello!  My 6 y/o FS Holland Lop, Hazel, has just started digging her hay and litter out of her box.  First, some history: She lives with her housemate,  George, in a 4’x6′ acrylic pen in which they have various options for chewing, and she has been showing happy bun behaviors.  She is currently being treated for an abscess at the base of her ear, and I have been expressing the abscess either daily or every other day.  She doesn’t love that but tolerates it and recovers, allowing me to give her pets.  Her litterbox and litter are the same, placement is the same. Over the past few weeks, I noticed she had started dragging her hay out of her litter box.  However over the past few days, she is now digging her litter out as well, making a giant mess.  Obviously, we cannot get inside her head to know what this is about, but I’m wondering if others have had this experience and what they have tried.  My plan so far is to change the litterbox placement at least temporarily to make this behavior less convenient, add more of her chew toys, and make a digging box.  I haven’t been giving her greens daily as I previously had, so I might bump that up a bit (small portions only!), and I might try hiding some treats for her to forage.  Thank you all for your insights!

Sometimes bunnies just decide this is a very fun thing to do. Giving her a digging box is a nice idea, and adding a litter box screen should also help with the digging.

Yep, one day it just magically becomes fun. I agree, a litter screen will perform miracles.
