My bun just got this weird crust in his right and left ears! What could it be?!?!?!And is he going to die?!?!?!
i don’t klnow enough about that to offer any guidance. could it be some kind of an ear infection? keep an eye on him, and i would make an appt for tuesday for the vet.
Could you describe the crust in the ears a bit more? A likely candidate is ear mites – which can be treated, you just need to get your bunny to a vet to ge the proper medication. The recommended medication that I have seen is Ivermectin which is a shot, and I think sometimes a follow up shot in two weeks. I’m sure that your vet can assist you with the proper treatment. It takes a bit of time for mites to show up as crust in the ears, which means that your rabbits could have had mites for awhile, so I’d recommend getting him to the vet as soon as you can. Do you have a good rabbit vet?
A description of the crust is needed…i.e. dark or black, flakey/dry or waxy/wet? My guess is mites as well & for that you should see your vet. It could also be a yeast type infection, possible fungus, or just sensitivities, that’s why a vet confirmation is highly suggested. Plus you would need to get the meds from a vet, pet store meds tend not to be very effective and/or strong enough.
Well it’s crusty and brown, my neighbor who is an expert in bunnies, said that it would possibly be ear mites. She said to rub in some mineral oil until the vet comes. I don’t have a vetrinarian but my mom just got us one! He’ll be seen on thursday even though I won’t be there.
lemon541 – do you have an update?
well he hasn’t gone to the vet but I’m leaving tomorrow at 4:30 a.m.!I have to get up at eother 3:00 or 3:30. Domino is doing fine, he isn’t showing any bad signs that it’s been hurting him and the whole mineral oil thing didn’t work well because he refused treatment
You will need a prescription med for ear mites…maybe its called erithymax (I’m sure Katnip can give the exact name if not Scarlet). Mites are small bugs. The mineral oil is only beneficial for cleaning the mite dirt out but likely won’t resolve the mite issue. Always treat mites promptly! I have run across too many cats that have developed severely deformed ears or ultimately developed chronic yeast infections in adulthood.
I must have missed something somewhere, so when you say you are leaving 4:30am tomorrow, I am figuring you are leaving somewhere for a longer period of time? If so, how long and can someone else take him to the vet?
Mineral Oil – For treatment of ear mites. Your bunny may shake his head or scratch his ears a lot when harboring ear mites. Ear mites appear dark orange or red to very black in the ears and are often mistaken for wax. A little mineral oil (not salad oil which turns rancid) can be put in a small spray bottle and sprayed in the ear twice daily for 3 days. An eye dropper can also be used. Massage the ear after putting the drops in to be sure it works it way down the ear. The bunny will shake his head and may shake the oil out if you don’t massage the ear first.
Hi, lashkay,
This is very nice of you to give a suggestion. Were you doing a search for something in particular? It was posted in 2008.
Did you want to reopen a discussion of Mineral Oil or Ear mites? Maybe we should start a fresh post on it.
Hi RabbitPam LOL 2008? Gee, I didn’t look at the dates. Just came upon this inexpensive mineral oil treatment for earmites, by no means outdated. LOL (I see I’m not the only one who’s mentioned mineral oil as a cure for earmites, but I didn’t see anyone mentioning putting it in a spraybottle for ease of application with unruly bunnies so thought I would) and searched/saw crust in ear and didn’t give any thought to the date, sorry. I was looking for the member’s post: “Ah crap, earmites…” or something like that but couldn’t find it. Can you tell me under which heading to find it? thanks. That’s a timely current post on ear mites. I mentioned the spray bottle in that one too. I’ll be more aware of the dates of the threads and posts, next time, thanks.

I saw your reply about the spray with mineral oil and thought that was really interesting (you get up close so it doesn’t spray outside the ear, right?).
I know which post you mean, so will try to find it now.
Don’t worry about scaring up an older post. Some of our best info. comes from the earlier posts. BB had a couple of great Forum Leaders who did a few years with her that gave priceless info. on many topics. I’m thinking of Scarlett Rose and Moobunnay. Anyway, their experience and knowledge paved the way for a lot of good bunny care and segments of info. used here – and they taught the rest of us well.
I’ve seen the mineral oil for ear mites. I would be interested to know anyone who’s actually tried this. In my opinion, I still think it’s best to seek a vet on these things. I know Ivermectin will actually kill the mites – I don’t know if mineral oil will. I also cannot imagine the mess this would make. I also know Revolution works for ear mites as well. I think I would seek the advice of a vet on the mineral oil.
Haha, just saw this post and was going to say it sure sounded like ear mites, then saw the link back to my issue.
Mineral oil might be a good solution sometimes, but I’m really glad I went to the vet because my bunny had an infection from the mites too. I might not have realized that before it was too late if I treated it myself.
The checkups for both bunnies weren’t cheap, but the Revolution itself was only about $15 per application. Really not a bad deal.
Thanks, RabbitPam, found it. Yes, spray close to the inside of the ear and the closer you spray into the ear, the more concentrated the application. Thanks, I too have found some of the best and most beneficial tips have been through searching through pastdated threads.
I agree, Sarita, always best to check with a vet but in a pinch mineral oil could be used as an inexpensive treatment provided there’s NO infection, as BinkyBunny pointed out from Dana Kempe sp? in Battie’s thread Ahcrap, earmites. You could spray the ear with a sheet of cardboard held behind the rabbit’s head to avoid too much mess.
I’m glad Miss Beulah is better, Battie, and glad the Revolution worked.
Could it be a scape? Archie had a dry brownish spot on his ear not to long ago that healed up nicely, it was just a scape from iching his ear…his nails must have needed trimmed and he cut himself.
