Hi I’m brand new to this site and I saw some pictures of some really cool bunny condos people built. I have a few questions. How sturdy are these things? They look very unstable from the pictures and it looks like they could come crashing down at any moment. Also what do people put on the bottom? My bunny isn’t very well litter box trained he would definitely poop all over the carpet so what should I put there? Any other tips would be greatly appreciated, I don’t even know where to begin.

Overall, the NIC condos are fairly stable but it would really depends on your bun and how well you construct it. For example, if you have a heavy/large bun that like to jump, it’s possible the condo would shake. However, it should not come crashing down if you put enough ties. I can crawl in and sit in my buns’ condo if I really wanted. At the worst, a few ties may snap off but you can easily replace them when they do. If you put enough, a few snapping would be irrelevant.

As for the bottom, I had a “tray” built from plywood and lined with linoleum for the entire thing to sit on to protect the floors and to wheel around. A much cheap and easier option is to just lay something on the bottom. For example, you could use a shower curtain, plastic carpet covers, etc.

Thanks a lot for your response! NIC condos are made up of what exactly? Those wire cubes? And could you link me to an exact list of materials to build one of these, also approximate cost? And will I need tools or is it all clip ons?

This site is a very good guide: http://www.rabbitcondo.com/condo-details

From there, you can modify as needed. Note that the prices listed were from a few years ago. My prices were higher for most of the materials. Not sure where you live but you can search craigslist for wire cubes if you need to save $. I got some there as well as Bed, Bath, and Beyond with their $5 coupons. You can also improvise a lot. For example, using cloth covered cardboard for the levels instead of plywood (I didn’t do this but considered it b/c I don’t have power tools).

Thanks so much for your help. We went out and bought all the materials and made him a HUGE xpen/condo! (It’s like a mix of the two). I actually enjoyed making it/designing it and I’m sure there will be additions in the future!
