Bunny cage flooring and walls??

This is going to be kind of long so be prepared!

I’m getting my first rabbit soon. Her name Bonnie she’s a Vlop. My husband and I are young(21 and 22) and we are still renters so we have decided to buy a small RV from my in-laws for emergency purposes so we’ll always have a home. We are good savers,like to keep $4,000-$5000 in savings at all times and can afford a rabbit! I’m also a stay at home wife so the 1 rabbit I have will get plenty of attention. I just wanted to make that clear so there are no confusions. 

To avoid any issues with the house we’re renting(Yes our landlord gave us the okay, i’m talking damages) we’ve decided to build our rabbit cage in our RV(with heating and cooling of course), it will be a 4ftX6ft space which i’ll show a picture of down below. My question is about materials to cover the wood and carpet with. What should we use?

We’ve tossed around eva foam for the floor and walls as well as vinyl. I’m just not sure what to cover the spot where the corners meet with. We’ve also though about putting chicken wire up where the walIs are maybe even an inch away to prevent chewing there. Is there a better material to cover up the wood with?

The entrance area will be a big chicken wire and wood door!

I just want to be clear, with bunnies of my own that has health issues, I would suggest not having a bunny live outside the home as it is highly advised to avoid that, since they can get sick suddenly and if they are outside you are less likely to see their symptoms until it is too late. They are prey animals and if they see a predator outside they can freak out and they need you there for comfort. I suggest reading about first time bunny owners on Houserabbitsociety.com.
But for the RV, bunnies need a very very comfy floor, not just vinyl, they will get sore hocks and break the skin that can lead to infection. I would suggest foam(cushiony) flooring (2 inches at least) with a plastic cover onto so pee does not seep through, then a fleet blanket ontop (remember to wash everyday or every other day). I suggest no chicken wire as they can chew that and actually break off their incisors or cause a malocclusion(misalignment of the incisors due to chewing on something hard and the teeth become overlapping). You could line the walls with a cheap low pile carpet(like restaurant carpet) so they can eat the fibers and get GI stasis.

I really highly suggest you read about first time bunny owning on house rabbit and even binky bunny because you will learn so much information, because bunnies are not like cats and dogs, they need a lot of attention and medical attention if something happens. I wish someone would have told me before I got mine. Make sure you have a rabbit savvy vet-not a cat and dog vet and read as many forums as you can so you can get all the information you can.

I definitely get where you are coming from and I will not use chicken wire then! We’ve done a lot of research and are in a couple of groups on facebook. I know a rabbit is different than a dog or cat, that’s actually why I chose a rabbit. I actually had a chinchilla for 2 years who was a pet store rescue but he died young because of things the pet store did that just couldn’t be reversed. My point there is I have experience with prey animals, i’m prepared for it all when it comes to vets ect… And i’m pretty well decided on the rabbit being in the trailer. like I said I’m a stay at home but we have a lot of roommates so the RV is literally my space. I will be living in it minus showering and cooking. so i’ll be in it more than the house anyway. And i’ll block off the windows in the bunny cage area! But I will take the rest of the advice.  the flooring and walls was really my big question I couldn’t find an answer too and you definitely helped.

Let us know if you have any other questions, since everyday you learn something new about bunnies. I would also suggest asking a vet what their recommendation is for the floors and walls so the bunny can be as safe as possible. And make sure you don’t block the windows, as bunnies do need the sunlight and need to see outside just as humans do!
