So my bunny will be a year old in mid October I am still not sure if Hana is a boy or a girl(Mum invites her friend who is the vet over, but she is scared of bunnies so we have never found out, I know I need to get mum to book an appointment) the person we bought it off said it was likely to be a boy becuase it was the biggest but then I read females are bigger. And has so far shown no teenage like behaviour.

Anyway, today I decided to let Hana out while I cleaned the litterbox etc. instead Hana jumped into the litterbox as I was trying to remove it. Then lunged to the side and bit me below my thumb. I was to surprised to squeal as they say you should, I am used to nibbles but never bites. The bite did not draw blood but did leave a mark.

I wonder if I was bit because I was trying to take out the litterbox. Im hoping it was just territorial behaviour although I do this all the time without the same outcome. I am just hoping it is a one off, we couldn’t even touch my old bunnies without getting bitten.

Hit the submit button once. If you keep hitting it, it will post a bunch of times once it goes though.

Well lunging and biting while sitting in the litter box and you entering their space is definitely territorial in nature. Now both boys and girls can do this, but it seems more common in girls. Since you do not know the gender of your bun, I’m guess he/she is not neutered/spayed. You should make an appointment with the vet to find out and then make plans to have it done. It won’t always completely eliminate territorial behavior, but for many buns the intensity is definitely taken down to a much lower level. It really depends on the bun.

I am always a bit more careful when dealing with the litter box. My buns are all fixed but have all at one time other other lunged at me when I tried to get the litter box or jumped into the box while I’m moving it to try to stop me from moving the box. Maybe once of twice gotten bitten but I really don’t think it’s intentional; it’s just their box / their sanctuary.

Really? My boys could care less about their litter box or cage. If I’m cleaning stuff, they just sniff me to see what I’m doing. They aren’t aggressive at all about their space.

Thanks I thought it might be territorial.

My boys are like LBJ’s – they just get very curious – walk around, nudge me when I change their litter boxes….but they never get aggressive.

But since Winnie the Poo is still not fixed…it makes sense that he/she is territorial.
