uh oh… Odang found a stray piece of mini-m&m’s and ate it.  i think she only ate one but maybe she ate two.  i’m so worried she might get really sick and have diarrhea.  shoot.

also… she might or might not have fur mites.  it’s really hard to find.  a couple of months ago, i found an open wound about half a cm long.  i thought that maybe she fought with Boba or something (I separated them now) and it healed up.  but now i see a little bit of flakes still left, but none of that crusty skin usually found with fur mites.  boba used to have a tiny bit of flakes but i can’t find them anymore.  it was in the same spot as Odang’s, right between their shoulder blades behind the head, in the center.

they were litter mates and did EVERYTHING together.  now, they won’t stop fighting.  they’re both girls, so i thought it’d be okay, but i’m hoping they’ll stop fighting once they get fixed.  Odang never really pooped outside the cage before, but now she’s landing those nasty smelling ones everywhere as she is binkying.  they honk at each other and try to hump each other for dominance.  they’re both 7 months old and have an appointment with the vet next week.

sorry there are so many probs/questions but i finally got my computer working somewhat.  if anyone has any info that would help me, i’d sincerely appreciate it.

mostly, for now, i’m wondering if Odang will be okay with the chocolate she ate.

As far as I know chocolate is usually okay for rabbits in very small amounts (of course, it’s super sugary so I wouldn’t give it as a regular treat). Just make sure she keeps eating/pooping, and eating plenty of fresh hay and water, and she’ll probably be fine.

If she’s still OK today, she’s probably not harmed by the chocolate. But I am also a bit concerned about the fur mite areas. Would it be possible to get your appointment changed to this week instead?

*Chocolate is really bad for dogs, but I’ve never read about any toxicity with rabbits. It’s not health food obviously but I wouldn’t fret, especially with a small amount. -To make you feel better, rabbits on this board have eaten remote control buttons, carpet, halls (cough candy), chips, granola bars, cereal etc. etc.

*If your having them spayed (which you absolutely should!!!) why not take both in for a quick pre-spay exam. That way the vet can check the old wound and look for mites, as well as get info prior to the spay.

*You were right seperating them, and they are fighting because of horomones. Once the spays are done (and a month to heal and rid their body of horomones) we can help you re-bond them so they live peacefully together again!

Chocolate doesn’t have the toxicity it does with dogs but any high sugar item taken in sufficient doses can cause changes to a rabbit’s bacterial digestive track and that could result in badness. But an M&M or two? you shouldn’t worry about that.

Haha. Thank you all for the reassurance. I actually just got them spayed yesterday and now I’m worried because although Boba has started munching on vegetables, Odang hasn’t. I got her to eat two raisins since yesterday, but that’s been it. I’m concerned because she hasn’t pooped at all post surgery. Will I have to force feed her?

Here is a link – Amanda recently had a thread about this very problem – please read & call your vet to ask about time lines & what you should do; the vet will know what time the surgery was & if your bun ate anything at the office after the sugery. They will be able to tell you how many hours to let it go before having to force feed too. Lack of appitite is normal after surgery so don’t panic. I explained in the link exactly what I did when I did have to do it so reading the link might make you feel more informed & less afraid. Chances are you won’t have to do it but it’s nice to know how & what etc.

I’m going out for a bit but I’ll check this thread later for an update.

How is she doing? Did she eat on her own?

Chocolate for dogs is only toxic in large quantities– they have to have about an ounce per 10 pounds of bodyweight for it to be a problem, and that’s the 80% cocoa kind, not milk chocolate. I’d say it’s better to avoid giving any humany foods to any pet in anything other than mistaken quantities.

So I’d agree with everyone and say that the chocolate itself won’t hurt her, but if her stomach became sensitive as a result that’s where your problem would be.

i’m sorry for the late update everyone. things have just been SO CRAZY! so odang started eating a little more. their poop was really wet and teeny tiny, but i think they’re ok now. i’m just not sure whether i need to take them back for removing stitches or whatnot. do bunnies even get stitches? GOOD NEWS!!! odang and boba are getting along better! yay!
