My bunny accidentally ate a small piece of nitrile disposable glove. Maybe about 1mm-2mm in size. I am scared it will cause an intestinal blockage. How concerned should I be? No vets available at this time.

I don’t think you need to worry a lot, bunnies tend to chew what they swallow very well. I had a bunny that ate many a non-food item in his day, half a rubber cat toy, pieces of a hot water bottle, pieces of rubber boots, the rim of a dust pan. It was rather difficult to keep up with him, honestly.

Give lots of hay and water. Monitor appetite and poop.

How do you know the bunny ate the object? When did the bun eat it?

Rabbits often eat non-food items, the good thing is that they chew what they swallow very well. You can’t make a rabbit vomit, it’s not possible due to their anatomy, so anything that goes in must either pass through, or be removed surgically. If you suspect your bun has eaten something poisonous you should contact a vet asap, they can give activated charcoal. Don’t try giving activated charcoal at home.

What symptoms does you bun have?

Margaret, I highly recommend you take your bunny to a bunny vet asap if you think your bunny ate something that is not food and large enough to cause an intestinal blockage. I lost my Harvey a little over a month ago because of that. I’m pretty sure that is what happened and I didn’t realize it until after he died. I didn’t get an autopsy but I probably should have. I researched his symptoms and he had them. He was 8.5 years old, he was shedding heavily I think he ate too much fur or too much at once. Now he’s gone :-(..

What’s very small? Is it something he can chew in to pieces? 3 hours is a long time for this. If you wait until he stops eating, he will likely die a painful death even at that age. You will prevent a world of pain if you take him to the vet now. They will take him in even if you have never been there.

This is just some info I have found:

Most things buns eat pass through, but if you don’t see any poop in 6-12 hours and/of he starts refusing food, you should contact a vet.

It’s good that he’s eaten some kale. Encourage him to eat hay, sometimes they’re willing to eat more if you hand feed hay strand by strand. You can also serve him his greens dripping wet, because it’s very important he gets enough water in him.

You can give a digestive support “cookie”.

Keep us posted if you like to, many of us have been in similar situations with our buns, so we know how worrisome it is!

It’s good if you can make him move around a little, because that helps the intestines move so their contents get pushed through. Empty his litterbox and replace the litter so you can see exactly how many poops he makes.

It’s good you know what’s normal for him, they often don’t poop during their nap time so that’s not worrisome. I had a bunny that ate many strange things during his first years, he always came through without a problem. I often didn’t know what he’d eaten until I found the holes. The good thing with rabbit is that they can’t swallow big pieces of anything the way cats and dogs do.

Will he take a treat from you if you offer him one?
