BunBun very loveable when he (I) wakes up

I wake up a couple hours earlier than my wife daily to leave for work, and the sun is just coming up. As BunBun hears me rummaging around for socks and pulling on my trousers, he comes to the corner of his cage, stands on his hind legs, and seemingly begs for me to come to say goodbye to him. He’s no more than two months old at the moment, and we’ve had him for two weeks going on three.

I put my fingers through the cage and he’ll rest his chin on them and start grinding his teeth. He seems very content, not interested in his bowl or ball of grass, food or water. He just wants to be rubbed. It happened like this four days out of five last week as I left for work. He actually seems still to be half asleep too, it’s very cute. This behavior is very different from when I get home from work. By evening, he’s been awake for a while (not including his twenty or so little naps) and has been pet and tended to all day by my wife.

Has anyone else experienced this with their bunnies? Are they generally more docile or receptive and even wanting to be petted and rubbed in the early dawn hours?

Yes. My bunny is definitely most cuddly and happy to see me first thing in the morning. She shares the master bedroom with us, but we obviously aren’t paying any attention to her while we’re sleeping. She gets so excited when she knows we’re stirring, and she can’t wait to let us know how much she missed us.

My bunny Rory is rather active in the morning, but I think that’s usually because he knows he’s getting fresh hay and pellets when I wake up. He’ll periscope to get his nose right to the top of the cage and stare at me expectantly. It’s also usually the most opportune time I can get in a couple nose pets before he decides I’m not worthy of touching him at the moment.

Yep – my Powder boy gets to stay in the bedroom with us at night and first thing in the morning he’s up in the bed wanting to be petted… even if I am not ready to get up yet lol (6am furry face in my face wanting to play), silly head.

Hmm… Mine usually zoom over my face and beg for food in the early dawn hours. So I’m jealous of the sweet behavior!

Bugz always stands up and wants a treat first thing in the morning the only time I can get a good pat in with him!

Chacha is very happy in the morning. My dad wakes up first, and as soon as he opens his door, Chacha comes and zooms to him. She wants food

Rabbits are relaxed during the day, and more awake at night

That’s very sweet, and not surprising.

Bunnies are what’s called Crepuscular, which means they are most active at dawn and dusk. They get their deep sleep during the midday and late at night. It’s in their genetics since those are the safest times to be out grazing without predators seeing them in the wild.

So, dawn is the time when many bunnies are the most energetic. They want to play, eat, drink, and be affectionate. BunBun knows you’re up too, and wants you to say hello and be friends. You are bonding. That can be your special time together.

Mine certainly aren’t like that – as soon as we get up the only thought in their heads is “Food! Where’s my food?! Stop petting me and give me my food!” Haha

He certainly does take many many naps between eating during the daytime! I guess he’s not lazy, he’s just “rabbit”!
