Bun weight

I weighed Sunny yesterday, and he was either 6 or 6.5 pounds, can’t remember which.  When I weighed him on his 1st birthday he weighed 9 pounds (9/6/11).  Now, according to my knowledge and recollection, I calculated his weight properly, and the same way both times; weighing myself, and him in his carrier, and THEN letting him out of his carrier and weighing only myself and the carrier and then subtracting his weight.  I believe I did this the same way in September.

 

So, in assuming I weighed and calculated correctly, what do you make of this? I don’t see any change in him. Still eating, pooing, peeing, same ol’ bunny. Only difference I can think of is he is eating waaay less oat hay, due to having to change brands. He mainly ate the mature oat I bought from BB store, he ate it more than even his timothy hay. Now that we can’t have it, we have the oxbow oat hay and he doesn’t eat much of it. Other than that, I am still giving the same amount of pellets (1/4 cup a day, plus some extras hidden in spots amongst his play house and dig box, anywhere from 0-1/4 cup per day), and lettuces. I don’t measure out his veggies. I just eye ball it.

Is this something to be concerned about? Or is it normal to see this much fluctuation? Or, do you think there could have been an error in weighing/calculating?

Turned 1 in September.

I guess my question would be – is your scale calibrated correctly. That is way too much of a weight decrease.

I don’t know, it’s just a regular bathroom digital scale.

If youa re concerned, a vet check wouldn’t be out of the question. Bathroom scales are hard to use to weigh buns properly, too.

Is there a way you can put him in a basket to weigh him? I just don’t think you are going to get the most accurate weight weighing him the way you are. I know that would be a challenge the other way but I would try to weigh him alone.

I tried weighing him in his carrier, without me, and it was so light it wouldn’t register anything.

I don’t think I’m concerned enough to take him to the vet, but I think I’m taking him in January for a regular check up anyway. I should be able to get an accurate weight then.

Maybe the 9 pound reading was wrong, I don’t know. Maybe he had drank and ate a lot beforehand lol? Everything is normal. Does oat hay put a lot of weight on them? I know alfalfa does, right? I don’t remember when it was that I moved him from alfalfa to timothy. It could have been around that time, or maybe a little bit before. Could that be a factor?

Oat hay is just grass hay, like timothy or orchard, not very fattening. Alfalfa is fattening. A 3lb drop would be noticeable though visibly as well as when you pick him up. It is almost impossible to get an accurate weight off a bathroom scale like that. You need an animal scale, or a vet to weigh him to get his real weight then and now. My bun has gained 1.4lbs since moving off alfalfa, but she has just reached full adult size.

When my Bridge bunny suddenly lost a lot of weight it was very noticeable, visibly and when I picked him up. I think there must have been something off with one of those scale measurements . I have had off readings from a regular human scale too. A kitchen scale works really nicely. I second Stickerbunny, oat hay is perfectly fine to feed unlimited.

I’m thinking something must have been off, too. I might try to see if I can get him on my kitchen scale, just to see what it says lol

Digital scales can sometimes give funny readings I’ve noticed. If not on 0 to begin it can give inaccurate reading.
If you have an idea of how much the carrier alone weighs maybe that is the discrepancy? If you didn’t deduct your weight and the carriers at the time.
I agree, a weightloss like that would be very noticable. It was probably more to do with an error. If that’s the case then at least you don’t have to worry about him!
