Has anyone taken their rabbit with them on a trip?  We have that trip coming up at the end of the month and I was thinking about taking Tucker along with us.  The only thing I am worried about is that it’s a far trip.  We’re splitting it up into two days with about 6-8 hours per day.  Then we’ll be in hotels each night getting there and each night while we’re there  It’ll be like 5 days total.  Tucker would have her smaller cage there with her pen to go out in while we were in the hotel.  Would it be better for her to be at home with either someone stopping by or at someone’s house or to go with us?  She’d have more space here or at a family member’s house but she wouldn’t have any strange dogs around with us and she’d be with us who she is used to.  I really am just concerned with the changes being too much and her not handling the actual trip well.

How long are you going to be gone for? My personal rule of thumb is any trip over 7-10 days (that I’m driving not flying) I bring my two with me. If it’s shorter than 10 days then I get a pet sitter so they can stay at home. When I drive to visit my parents- which is the main long trip I bring them on- it’s two 12 hr days of driving and they do ok. (Although my car has more bunny stuff in it than stuff for me and I stop every 2 hrs to give them food and water) I’ve traveled with a total of 3 buns at different times and they were all totally different: Bob (rainbow bridge bunny) LOVED traveling in the car- he thought it was heaven, Ember hates when the car is moving but as soon as it stops moving and whenever we get to where we’re going she super quickly bounces back and is really happy, Teddy doesn’t mind being in the car-he’ll munch on hay and drink water and flop!- but new places stress him out so he gets really skittish and sometimes doesn’t eat as well if he’s not at “home.” So, it can really vary based on your bun!

Argh. It won’t let me edit my post! I just noticed you said 5 days… you could probably go either way. Maybe try taking her for a shorter drive to see if it stresses her out to help you decide?

We’ll be leaving Friday night and coming back Tuesday afternoon.  So three full days and two half days.   The problem that we’re having is this trip was short notice and expensive so we don’t have money to pay for a sitter.  So, we either need to bring her with us or bring her to a parent’s house to stay during the time we’re gone.  Both of our parents have dogs/cats that we’re a bit concerned about not to mention that neither are really bunny people so we’re wondering how much attention/affection she’ll even get.  We’ve only driven with her once in the car and it was a short ride..it was when we brought her home.  We’ll be takng her to the vet’s next week and that’s about an hour away so I guess we can see how she does then too.   I was planning on bringing her small cage to ride in the car with and setting her up in the hotel bathroom during the day while we’re out and she has to stay at the hotel.  That would really only be that Sunday since we have a wedding to go to in the afternoon.  Saturday evening she could go with us to my Grandma’s house and Monday will be packing up and starting the trip home.  We would be stopping every couple hours anyway because we have three kids so potty breaks are a necessity!

I don’t think that’d be a problem at all. A very nervous bunny who shakes in the car and is nervous all the time, I wouldn’t subject to it…however most bunnies should have no prob. I’d totally take them.

The ONLY time I wouldn’t take them would be a) camping (too dangrous and too much trouble) or b) on a plane unless moving.

Otherwise I don’t see a big problem, they adjust!

i just started using rescue remedy on my buns. there’s a thread about it somewhere here. it’s herbal and can actually calm them down. if she’s very nervous, you might want to try that…

Hmm I’ll have to check it out.  I think she’ll do fine in the car.  The day that we had her on the way home she just kind of sat there.  I figure this time she’d have more time to get used to it and also she’d have us there who she is used to

I take Lizzy on field-trips 1.5 hours away pretty frequently. She LOVES new places, and is great once we get there. She hates the car though. And oddly, instead of getting better about it (as I figured she would, as she got more used to it), she’s actually getting worse… She thumped at me, last time! Lizzy NEVER thumps…very strange.

Yea I think I’ll see how she does with the trip to the vet on Friday but honestly it’s looking like I don’t have any other choice.  Noone is wanting to keep her that I trust to keep her.  Even my friend that was going to keep her is having personal issues.  Her boyfriend has been diagnosed with sarcoidosis and is having a really tough time and they’re getting ready to move the weekend after we get back to be closer to where he can get better doctor care.

Soo…looks like she’s going to have to go with us..I’ll just feel better if she’s not having every moment of it!
