About half an hour ago (at 4am-ish) I got woken up by bunny lunging at his cage. I’m lucky I did because I forgot to clip the panels together before bed and he was close to being able to get out. I have been limiting his free time lately because of excessive poops (Poops everywhere! post) but thought since he had been doing well in just a couple days he would get the night in the open pen. He doesn’t seem angry and I couldn’t find any posts about bunny lunging at cages just people or other buns. He is now sitting in his cage flopped on his belly looking pretty comfy. I’ve never seen or heard him do this before and am hoping it’s not the sign of an aggression problem. He has lived here a week now but has seemed pretty content in his space. Should I be worried to leave him unsupervised in the play pen area?

Hi just from reading this it sounds to me like he was just trying to get out. I had to keep my second rabbit in a cage with an expen for awhile. She would do the same thing from time to time. She had managed to get out a few times. That’s why I think he was trying to get out. As for leaving him unsupervised I would just make sure to secured the pen. I guess its really what you feel comfortable doing. If he has been in the pen a few days and you haven’t noticed him doing this before I wouldn’t worry too much maybe he noticed the panels weren’t clipped and was like I said working on getting out.

My bun does this all the time! Though I wouldn’t have described it as lunging. He uses his nose to push the sides of the x-pen into different shapes – normally to try and get something outside of the x-pen that he can’t reach. My advice is to keep it well clipped up and to make sure there’s nothing bad he can get to by pushing on the sides. Yesterday Rufus managed to push out one of the corners, knock over a washing basket and eat a piece of plastic bag that was in the washing basket. Little rascal!
