Earlier this week I had to put my 13-year-old German Shepherd to sleep. She and my bun, Kali, were BFFs. In fact, in the last few days when Suki’s health was really failing, Kali was like her little nurse and checked on her multiple times a day, snuggled with her, etc.

For the most part, it seems like Kali has been adjusting well to not having Suki around, but she’s been way more cuddly with me. We’ve been snuggling in bed for a half hour or so every night, and tonight when she saw my bed (she mostly stays downstairs unless I bring her upstairs or she jumps the gate) she literally jumped out of my arms (onto the bed) and ran up to my pillow and hunkered down for snuggles. Before this, she used to snuggle for maybe 5 minutes and then she got bored and wanted to go do other things.

But I’m a little worried that Kali is going to get depressed without another pet in the house. I really don’t want to get another pet right away. I got Kali because Whisky passed and Suki was so depressed without a friend.

Any tips for keeping a bunny solo? She’s only 6 months old, so I think she’ll probably adjust fine, but I worry about her and I can’t deal with another loss this year.

I’m so sorry you lost your dog. I have a GSD too. They are wonderful. I dont have any good tips on how to help Kali except give her a lot of attention. Spend as much time as you can with her. It’s lovely that she’s asking you for extra cuddles.

I’m so sorry to hear your GSD needed to go to sleep. My Mum had her eldest GSD euthanized last October.

It sounds like Kali is getting the comfort she needs from you. Her snuggles with you sound lovely. I wouldn’t worry just yet about her becoming depressed. She may well adjust with you just fine. Just keep an eye on her. You’ll know if she’s struggling, so you can think of a strategy if that happens. For now, enjoy your time with her and ensure she gets plenty of attention. She’s very young so you could always get a bun-panion next year or something.

Hugs for you and Kali xxx

Just a quick update. Kali seems to be adjusting well. We have snuggles in my bed at least once a day and she loves it. She’ll cuddle for a half hour or more. She actually just flopped out in my arms for the first time tonight in bed. She’s not really been much of a flopper in the past, so this is pretty amazing (literally just happened as I was writing this update). I need to get my upstairs bunny proofed so that she can come up to my bedroom/office as much as she wants.
