So, my family got a new addition this past November. I have fostered buns in the past but have had to throw everything out the window for my current girl. She is a Belgian Hare and a permanent addition. She needs a lot of space, is incredibly intelligent and leaps over almost anything (I found her in my bathroom sink last week). She had been staying quite nicely in a play pen in one of the little girl’s rooms until she started leaping over it (it’s made for small dogs). We tried keeping her in it every which way but it has been decided that we should move her out of the room and into one of the common living areas where she can have more space and we can build something bigger/more secure for her.
I wanted to use x-pens or something similar but have been vetoed in favor of something that looks ‘nicer’.
So does anyone here have any advice on building wooden indoor hutches? I also plan on building an outdoor hutch and play area for when the weather is nicer and we can all hang out together outside on nice days. But that is a while off yet.
The things I have already found out are 1) to make sure the wood is untreated 2) cover the bottom with linoleum flooring 3) I had seen mention of somewhere that someone used a non-toxic sealant ? 4) put wheels or something on the bottom for moving
Any other ideas? Things to watch out for? I’m trying to make this as nice looking as possible but also safe for Gretel and easy for me to deal with.
If anyone has any pics of something similar I would love to see them! I plan on making it 3 levels.
Thanks!
