My dad and I are going to build a two story hutch modeled after my former house that I lived in! It was my idea to model it after the old house cause the way it’s built is perfect for a bunny hutch! I’ve made a paper model and everything is perfect! My dad had the idea to make a new hutch for domino. He said that we should make it two story and when I went a little bit later on a walk with my mom I thought of my old house. My dad is using the hutch we just got from a neighbor as a model. If you have any tips on how to make or what to make it with, please post!

What I mean by what to build it with is , what woods to avoid, any structural ideas on keeping it balanced, stuff like that

I’d say to be careful what wood you build it with, IMO you should use Pine since it’s bunny safe. Other then that, I say-have fun!!!

I would recommend linoleum for the flooring because it is very easy to clean up, and it won’t hurt the bunny’s feet like wire. Put some rugs over it as well so your bun can lay down on something soft.

well, I don’t want him to sit in his own poop(especially otuside!)

Is your bunny going to live outside, or just visit outside in the hutch? He probably won’t sit in poop if he has a litter box.

well, he is going to be out there in the morning and in the mid evening(don’t worry, he won’t sleep out side.) He will stay out in the morning until it gets hot. And once it cools off, he’ll go outside until it’s about 8:00P.M. and in he goes to sleep.

are you going to be out there with him at those times, and will he have an xpen attached that he can run around in? the reason why i ask is that bunnies are crepuscular. what this means is they are most active in the morning and evening. this is when he will be wanting to interact with you the most and have run and playtime. i don’t think it’s a good idea to put him into a small hutch when he is most alert.

This sounds ike such a cool project, yay! I’ve thought about building a new hutch / cage for my little guy. I’ve never quite found the “perfect” cage.

I vote for pictures of the progress!

Don’t use Redwood as that is toxic if a bunny chews on it, and pine is okay if the hutch is not mostly enclosed. As long has you have holes tjat alllow air flow) Also, because rabbits chew on wood, you want to make sure whatever wood you use, it’s not treated.

I ditto Beka on her questions. I’d like to know the same things.

Though I am still a big advocate of “House Bunnies”, I did spot this outdoor set-up that gave a run below, but allowed the bunny to escape “above” the ground. http://www.zooplus.ie/shop/rodents/cages/rabbit_hutches/natura/53359

On another note be careful what wood treatments you use as some are toxic to bunnies. Linseed oil mixed with…something I cant remember is great but you’ll have to google it. A tip is to put the top on hinges so you can open up the top. This makes it easier to pick up your rabbit as well as making it easier to clean.
