Buffy Got Speyed Yesterday And She Is Soo Scared She Won’t Come Out From Behind The Couch I Have Put Food And Water There. She Will Take A Quick Sip Of Water But Thats About It, She Isn’t Eating. Should I Call The Vet Because I Was Told That If They Don’t Eat Their Internal Organs Can Shut Down.

Oh And For Those Of You Who I Was Talking To The Other Day, Yes Binky Was Alowed To Go To The Vet Will Buffy <3

It takes a good 48 to 72 hours for females to fully recover from their spay – I would try to get her to a safe location where you can have access to her – I’m sure she feels safe behind the couch, but you cannot monitor her. The first 24 hours they are definitely still out of it from the pain meds.

Put her in a warm area with Binky – try to entice her with fresh greens and herbs. MooBunnay suggested breaking parsley in two to release the fragrance to entice the bunny to eat. I also find kale and dill entices them.

Did the vet give you any pain meds for her too?

I’m glad you got to take Binky too.

The vet didn’t give me any meds, I might go down the shops in a while to get some greens.

have you been able to get her out yet?  you may need to have someone help you very carefully move the couch so you can retrieve her.  she does need to be confined for a bit.  spaying is much harder on the girls than neutering is on the boys.  she’ll need time to recover.

That is actually quite appalling that they haven’t given you pain meds to take home. If they try telling you that they have given her a shot don’t let them fob you off. That will wear off after 24 hours and she will not be recovered by then. She should be on pain meds for a good few days still. Call the vet and ask them for some metacam and for the dosage.
One of my rabbits was spayed on Wednesday and did not react very well at all. She has barely eaten a thing and resists force feeding. I had to take her back to the vet today for stronger pain relief and some gut stimulant drugs to try and keep things moving. I am now giving her metacam, metaclopramide and zantac. Hopefully she will pick up soon. This afternoon is the first time I have actually seen her hop around, she mostly sat in the same spot since she came home. The pain they have after a spay is chronic so they need constant pain relief to keep them comfortable, a rabbit in pain will not eat. Please call your vet and insist that she is given something, it should be common practice to give pain meds after such a surgery.

Charlie – I agree that it should be common practice to give pain meds after a spay. Although, when I took Cadbury, I never got any to take home. She recovered pretty quickly and started eating right away, but I worry what would have happened if she didn’t. The vet that spayed her was a HRS approved vet, and one recommended by many bunny rescues in the area. Do a lot of vets not give pain meds post-op?

Cadbury – It should actually be standard practice to provide pain relief following something like a spay, however sadly not all vets do. It is quite shocking actually because all people interested in rabbits ESPECIALLY rabbit savvy vets should know that pain analgesia is vital in rabbits. Rabbits have to be eating as soon as possible after any procedure and as you can imagine a surgery such as a spay would cause tremendous amounts of pain. Some rabbits like Cadbury will have strong survival instincts and will be able to consume eating as in the wild a sick bunny IS eaten! Others like my Phoebe will not do without pain relief.

I completely agree how essential pain meds are for rabbits…they need to get back to feeling good enough for eating asap.  I’m glad that Binky & Buffy got to stay together.  At this point, you need to set up some MAJOR interventions.  See if you can get a script for Metacam and possibly motility meds asap.  Fix her up in a pen or caged area.  I cleaned out the litterbox very well during the surgery, so it was clean and filled w/ carefresh when she got hom.  She spent the first several days laying in a meatloaf position in that litterbox.  Also, you may want to start force feeding her if she has not been eating pellets and/or veggies since her return home.  If you do not have any critical care, get some canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) and/or fruit or veggie baby food.  Mine love the apple and banana baby food flavors.  Monitor her poop and pee output—this will help w/ keeping track of her eating as well.  I’m guessing its been about 12 -24 hrs post spay, so please force her to eat if she hasn’t really done so yet.  I agree that you need to get some help and get her out from behind the couch.  I know that Jessica was on cage rest, single level, for the first 48 hrs and was not allowed to hip hop at all!
