It seems that these days people are looking for ways to save money, and I was wondering if anyone has some good money saving tips related to rabbit care?  I’ve been trying to find a way to get veg on the cheap, but I can never seem to find any good deals on it.

This is what I do to save money:

        1. I buy bales of “horse quality” hay at the feed store, timothy is only around $12 a bale at my local feed store and lasts around 2 months with my 7 buns!

        2. I buy my pellets from the local rabbit rescue rather than having to pay shipping to ship them from Oxbow

        3.  I always check at Big Lots for new rugs for the bunny cages, and use rubbermaid bins as litterboxes because I can get them for much lower prices than the actual litterboxes that are sold at Petco/Petsmar

Does anyone else have some good tips to share?  The less I spend on bunny necessities, the more I usually spend on treats for them so I guess it all gets spent in the end!

          1) I buy the largest possible size of food and keep in in a large tuperware container

          2) I buy veggies either from Walmart or this discount produce store (H & M) where I can seriously buy four bags of veggies for less then ten dollars (They buy the veggies at auction that aren’t good enough for resturaunts and sell them very cheaply)

          Hmmm that’s all I got…maybe that’s why I’m broke!!!

great thread idea moobunnay!  here’s what i do so far…

            1. i also buy horse quality hay bales.  actually i’m on my first bale since i found a farm to buy from directly only a couple of months ago.  he sold me the bale for only $4!!!  it’s so big i haven’t even taken enough off of the top for my 2 buns to fit on the rubbermaid bin lid.
            2. i buy pellets from the bulk barn.  they’re a percentage or two off on the recommended protein but it sure is a whole lot cheaper.
            3. i buy remnant pieces of fleece from fabric stores & cut to size for bun blankets.  they wash out easy & don’t shred stringily when munched on.  plus i’ve been wrapping them around ceramic tiles for enclosure flooring for baby bun who likes to pee in every corner of her enclosure right now.
            4. i buy dollar store cleaning cloths (no more paper towels for cleaning bun stuff) and spray bottles to clean up with and use vinegar & water for cleaning.  plus i have plain water spray bottles for discipline and for rinsing the vinegar off of cleaned surfaces.   i also buy my plastic litter pans from the dollarstore.
            5. my cheap toys are cardboard pieces cut down from boxes before i recycle, toilet paper / paper towel tubes and old phone books.  i also have a whole shelf that i keep full with flyers / newspaper for the buns to select shredding material from.
            6. just this year i started composting all their litter and leftover hay bits which i’ll spread in the garden instead of buying fertilizer.

              1.  I use vinegar & water for all my cleaning of rabbits & baking soda when I need the scour power.  I usually buy the costco size bottle of vinegar & baking soda—super cheap!

              2.  I love giving the buns my veggie scraps, including the pieces that human folk don’t find so tasty.  At work or even parties, I ask for the “garnish” veggies from food trays (humans don’t usually eat raw kale, huge lettuce leaves or fancy cut veggies that are used for decoration).  People are super accommodating w/ these requests.

              3.  I buy most of my produce directly from my weekly farmer’s market.  Most of the farmer’s give me their veggie scraps or less than fresh veggies.  When I can’t get to the farmer’s market or need something I don’t find their I buy from an area produce shop….they sell in bulk (I can get bags of veggies for less than $10)!!!!

              4.  I also use a blend of litterbox filler (carefresh, newspaper, & bird wood pellets).  This allows me to use my preferred (and their’s) carefresh  longer.

              5.  I too LOVE the dollar store & Big Lots!!!  Rag rugs, bins, etc.

              6.  I try to purchase my Binky stuff at the same time (i.e. a few toys, treats & hay) rather than breaking it up into more regular shipments.

              7.  I have a black thumb, but I’ve been trying to grow some tasty herbs & flowers for the rabbits.  I’ve been doing really good w/ basil, cilantro, parsley, marigolds, & lavendar.

when we go to a store that has loose lettuce and we find that the bigs leaves have come off, we pick up these loose leaves and get them for free. also store leftovers we go thru and can find stuff that way. NO one minds.

For their floor in their Nic cubes I have found the rubbermaid storage bins I use their lids for the flooring. I find them for free behind Goodwill. I am still trying to find one that fits the bottom of their nic cubes without leaving bare floor spaces. the ones I have now leave a bit of space

I am growing carrots beets and radishes for the greens on top. Cotton won’t eat them but the girls love them. Cotton will only eat the little carrot at the roots there. lol.

We find plenty of cardboard boxes at stores too. Especially save a lot and publix. I find they like a new box every now n then.
