When I adopted Mae I got a packet of all her history, personality, and diet favs.  Basically she loves all food, hasnt found anything edible that she wont eat.  But her absolute favorite is brussel sprouts, so I got some and Hammer and Mae each get one a day.  My question is can they have more then one?  They both love them.  I thought they were gassy, but I cant figure out where I got that from so maybe not.  Neither seemed to have trouble with them, so Id like to make them a regular if they are okay.

I think it would be fine to give more than one especially to Mae since she’s had them before. I don’t think I would do more than maybe 2 per day though especially if you are doing a mixture anyway. Maybe email the foster who had Mae as well to see how many they gave her. I know that many rabbits just love the brussel sprouts.

I imagine the gassiness factor varies by rabbit too.

mine like them but because of my fear of gas I treat them like treats – only 1 per bun per few days.
Mine don’t gobble it down though – eat 1/2 right away then later they come back & finish it.

Are you getting them still on the stalk? I think I heard they enjoy the stalk as well.

I’ve never tried that. I have a plant outside. I wonder if they would like the leaves & if they would be safe to try?

Brussels sprouts are on the what I call the “use with Caution in Sensitive Bunnies” list.

So yes, they are OK- but moderation is best as they can cause gas or GI upset.

Yes, brussel sprouts are from the cabbage family of vegetables, so they really are like mini cabbages. I love them!
I never had them growing up because my mother hated them and never cooked them for us. Stinky to cook.

Like us, some things give some bunnies gas and others have less trouble, but b. sprouts are a “give in moderation” food for sure.
And a bunny with gas can be in discomfort,
                      or
you can tell they have it the old fashioned way.

Bunnies, like old men, get gassy sometimes when they age. I was on my computer when I had to turn to Spockie who was dozing in his cage and said “Spockie! Was that you???” SBD’s from bunnies. Pretty startling.

Brussel Sprouts are Jerseys favourite! It what I give her to stop bugging me while I get the rest of their greens ready. They don’t seem to have issue with them. They are also a veg that has high fibre content.
Sadly, the b sprout season is ending here…..I fear for my life.

Maryann loves brussel sprouts too but she has an incredible GI system. It can cause gas so just be careful.

Rupert and Kahlua love brussel sprouts. Chuck has a tummy that’s a bit sensitive so I don’t give him too much of them. I’m not sure Noot has had them, but he’s dang picky so I doubt he’d eat them.

What about frozen brussel sprouts…or other veggies for that matter? Are they just as good? I know that Pebbles loves a hunk of frozen mango especially because Phoenix is hot.

Frozen is fine. In fact they used to say frozen was not as good as fresh (in general) but frozen veggies are frozen immediatley after picking where as produce on shelves often ripened on trucks. So frozen is OFTEN more nutritious then regular

I would thaw a little before giving-mine like frozen fruit in the summer but thawing would be nice. A good way to dethaw veggies (or fish!!) is to put it in a strainer, and run cool water over it.

gizmo got a few leaves of one to try, he’s sometimes really sensitive! (can’t have more than a small amount of most veggies) so i’m treating them as a treat food until I see how it affects him.
