I have a lionhead whose fur gets matted easily.  I brush her every few days, but noticed the other day that I’m not doing as good as I thought.  Around her butt (behind her back feet and below her tail) the fur is getting matted– oh no!  So I tried brushing her bottom and she wouldn’t have any of it! She acted like I was trying to kill her.  I try this almost every day, to absolutely no avail.  She’s so sensitive I can’t even turn her on her back.  I try bunny burrito, but as soon as I go to do what I need, she’s flailing like mad. I think at this point she’s so cautious I can’t do anything.

        Help!

Yeah… you turn them on their back, right?  She won’t let me.  She literally goes crazy, and I can tell it stresses her because she breathes super hard.  I can’t get her on her back…

do you have someone else who can hold her while you brush? thats how i have found it easiest to do it, have someone hold her up belly facing you, with both of the buns hind legs firmly held so she cant kick and hurt herself, then brush her. maybe this will work?

a bunny burrito and a friend to help hold her.  My lionhead girl has long hair there too. It gets icky. What I have been doing is trimming it to a more normal shortness. Not too short to give her urine burn but short enuf to not have it get icky. I have to watch it cause next thing i know it grows out already.

Well hope you can get it all done.

Do you have any local rabbit rescues near you? I have to take one of my bunnies to a rabbit rescue to get his nails trimmed because I cannot, for the life of me, get this darned rabbit to calm down enough to trim his nails! Someone at a rabbit rescue could probably help you at least get the bunny on her back and help you brush the area. If there is one in your area, give them a call or send them an email and see if they can help you!

No rabbit rescue close by.  I’ll try getting someone to help me.  Bunnytowne– how short do you cut her hair?  Thanks for the help guys!

she’s going to get spayed right? maybe you can ask if they can cut that area very short (she will have to be shaved anyways) so that would take care of the mats and you can go from there with more frequent brushing. once an area is already matted, it’s hard to undo it.

Thanks Beka! That’s great advice because maybe the mats is part of why she’s so annoyed with me going there…

quite possibly. lionheads really do require a lot of grooming to prevent them from getting to that point, now you know this, so having them all cut off would be helpful.
