Well, Brownie goes in to be neutered tomorrow, and my bank account balance will then be much smaller! ANyway…he goes in at 9 am for bloodwork and an exam to make sure all is ok, then for surgery and will get called in the afternoonsometime to take him home. They did say he will go home withmeds and a collar. (can’t wait to see THAT?!)

What to expect? I am assuming I should superclean his cage tonight so he can comehome to fresh blankies and all? Should I block his upper levels to discourage jumping?

Any advice is appreciated! They did mention to NOT withhold food/water, etc. Is lining his carrier with a towel ok?

        Thanks!

        Kim

I would also super clean everything. I think blocking the upper levels is a good idea until he is up and about. Yes definitely keep feeding him. Rabbits do not fast before surgery unlike cats and dogs where you do have to have them fast. Yes line the carrier with a towel in case he goes potty.Good luck he’ll be fine!

sounds like you know what you are doing there. they like the towel in the carrier so they don’t slide about and have something soft to lie on may this go well for you both. will probably hurt you more than it hurts him.

be prepared. he may not be himself for a couple days, but the boys do usually bounce back quicker. and as far as teh bank account… you will not even miss the money. i can guarantee this. it will be the best money you’ve ever spent!

Second the ‘best money ever spend”

If your bunnies stroppy, expect that he might take the collar off LOL Kahlua did this, but she left her stitches alone, so I let her…

I wouldn’t let him jump on to the higher level. Just keep him quiet for a while. Fred didn’t have a collar or anything – no meds either. he was fine. I did have the vet close by if I needed anything though.
Maybe send him with some of his own food too.

Yep! (Finally!) I dropped him off at 9 am, bummed around town and he was released at 5:15! He did great, and seems to be his regular old self so far. He’s eating well, etc. He has pain meds for 3 days, but Doc said he didn’t need the collar, and that I didn’t have to confine him to the lower level of his condo if he seemed comfortable, and the height was not too great.

Evidently everyone working today fell in love with him, and couldn’t believe how mellow he was. They also got a kick out of his stuffed bunny buddy that he drags everywhere, lol. And they kept thinking there was another bunny in there with him!

I also got instructions to start switching him to the adult food, and limit his pellet in take a bit more. He was 4lbs, and Doc said he would be prone to more weight gain after neutering. Evidently he sees a lot of “chubby bunnies” that have health problems because of it.

So, yay! So far so good! No sutures, they just used the glue to close his incisions.

I’ll keep you posted! Thanks for the advice!

Yeah! Sounds if things went well. I’m glad he didn’t have to wear a collar. Most bunnies are not sent home with them and don’t need them unless they start messing with the incision.

Sendng healing vibes for a quick recovery.

I know the doctor said not too worry about him jumping up to other levels as long as he feels comfortable, but male bunnies especially are usually more active than their bodies can sometimes handle and they can actually rip their incision with too much exercise too soon, so vets have always told me to keep males from jumping too much for the first week.

Now, of course, I am not a vet, and you need to follow the advice that you feel fits best.

Well, I think we are pretty much back to normal here! Had a bit of a scare with no poops the following morning, but within a few hours he was going. It too him a few days to get back to eating and drinking normally, but he did well with freshly wet greens. I think the pain meds we were sent home with helped a lot…he was a grumpy bunny the first few days!

Thanks for all the help and advice in getting through it!
