Ok I’m new to the forum and to having rabbits so I’m really not sure what’s going on !

I have two male Netherland Dwarf rabbits called Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny (not original I’m afraid). I’ve only had them for nine days and am just starting to let them out to explore the flat a bit. Peter is definately the braver of the two and has had a good wander. However, when he got back in with his brother into their cage they appeared to be having/simulating sex! Is this normal behaviour for two male bunnies ? They are as yet not neutered (although they will be soon). I have double checked and they are definately both boys.

Any advice would be helpful thanks

          Welcome Jelly!!

Humping is absolutely normal, in all ages and all sexes of rabbits. If it’s excessive or violent (ie. one of them is getting hurt) then you might like to seperate them until after their neuter, but occasional humping is almost always about asserting dominance and shouldn’t be worriesome! Good news right?

Checked out the blog and they are ADORABLE I LOVE netherland dwarfs!!

That’s fantastic news ! It was pretty gentle humping but I was just worried about getting extra little buns. Oh and thanks for the kind words – they are so cute !

              welcome here!

have you double-checked the sex, or has your vet? it’s not easy to sex rabbits by any means, esp. when they are very young. if the vet has not seen them, i would make an appt as soon as you can to have them officially sexed, and get info about the neuters while you are there. boys can be neutered as early as 3-4 months. the sooner you do that, the less the chance they will fight and have to be separated and rebonded. if you’re not sure how old they are, the vet will also be able to give you an approximate age. it is a good idea to take any new pet into the vet within a couple weeks of getting them, so your vet can do an introductory exam and test for parasites that might be present. if they came from a petstore or someplace with many rabbits (like a breeder), that’s not uncommon at all.

do you have a rabbit savvy vet yet?

Rabbits aren’t actually babies – they’re definately teenagers. However, trip to vet for full check over will be made as soon as possible … there’s some weird thing going round rabbits in my town (Edinburgh) so I want to get them vaccinated against it as soon as possible. Luckily we have an entire vet school here so rabbit savvyness is not going to be a problem – thanks for the advice !
