My little Tilly hurt her toe somehow the other night and it’s all black and the whole toe kinda looks dead… I’m really worried about her and I can’t take her to the vet right now. Is there anything I can do for her? I’ve only owned 3 rabbits and I’ve never had this happen to any of them until now. She won’t let me touch it without grunting at me or trying to bite me. She used to be so sweet but I think she’s in pain. What can I do for her? I’ve tried my best to make her as comfortable as possible. Now what do I need to do? Has this happened to anyone? I feel like she’s going to lose her toe if I don’t do something fast…?

Update: Her toe still looks bad but she is now hopping around just fine and being cuddly again but I’m still worried about her since the toe is still dead and attached.

Is it money reasons that you can’t take her to the vet?

As you know, it’s clearly something that needs vet attention. I would be very worried if her toe had died and you just left it attached.

If you can’t afford it right now, you should try and talk to vets about payment plans, or talk to a shelter about whether they can help, or even look into credit cards. It is not okay to leave her suffering.

What happens if the dead toe stays attached?

Well I imagine it would start rotting and possibly give her blood poisoning if it is actually dead.

She could also end up going into GI stasis, as rabbits that are in pain often stop eating, which is another life threatening condition.

I’m not really sure how a rabbit’s toe would just die though. Can you post a photo? Is she limping?

If she really does have a dead limb, it’s not enough to just say you can’t take her to the vet, you need to think about solutions. Have you asked any shelters if they could help? Have you asked if the vet would accept a payment plan?

Not yet but we will. Thanks for the help. I do have a pic but I don’t know how to post pics on here. I’m new to this. How do I add it?

You really need to bring her to a vet. I understand that your parents will have to pay for it, but they are just going to have to deal with that. Imagine the implications of it healing improperly- or worse- it becomes infected and starts a systemic infection (think sepsis)… You really should talk to your parents about this. The pain of it alone could cause her so much discomfort that she doesn’t eat and ends up in stasis. So it’s definitely not something that can wait.

You can attach a photo by hitting the “reply” button. Then you select the file, hit upload, and then you have to hit insert. If the picture shows up in the text box we will be able to see it.

She needs a vet asap. Either the dead limb will start to poison her and kill her or she will chew it off (which can cause her to bleed out and/or cause a deadly infection). Simply not going to the vet for a dead limb is not acceptable.

Borrow money, take out a small loan, fast crowd source (a month is going to be too long; you likely have a week or less), call a rabbit shelter and ask for advice/vet discounts, or take her to a rabbit shelter and give her up (doing so, theyll be able to take her into the vet asap for proper vetting of the dead limb).

If it looks bad, it is bad. We’re not saying this stuff to scare you or be mean, but she really absolutely does need to be seen by a vet, asap. Just because she seems fine now doesn’t mean she is. Bunnies hide their pain really well until they no longer can. Bunnies can also die without warning because they were seemingly fine when you left for work or school. Sepsis is very serious and can kill, sometimes a slow painful death.

I’m not sure when this *update* is from, but regardless if she seems to be doing well you need to bring her in. If it is broken, it needs to be set properly so it can heal, otherwise it may cause her issues later in life or even make her more prone to repeat injury. The fact that it was black and looks “dead” tells me that there’s obviously something quite wrong, blood circulation issues or something. This really isn’t a home remedy situation.

Cough up the cash and take her to a vet. What advice do you expect? Leaving her to suffer is completely unacceptable.

How is your bunny doing now? How does the toe and foot look and is there any foul smell?
