broken dwarf rabbit tooth

Hello, I have 2 male netherland dwarf rabbits, named Hoops and Yoyo, Hoops has suddenly stopped eating the hay he normally eats, and he seemed to be having trouble biting and chewing the treats that I always give him which he LOVES. I didn’t really know what was up and then today I noticed while he was eating his food his bottom teeth looked a little weird. I took a better look by lifting his lips and saw that one of his bottom teeth was half the size as the other, so it must have broke somehow. I was wondering if it will just grow back and his eating habits will go back to the way they were? I’m really nervous because I’m pretty much completely broke and a university student and really can’t afford to take him to the vet right now. Help!!

He’s probably in a lot of pain. There’s really no alternative but to discuss the situation with a vet and get some pain meds.

This is something we really can’t fix. Though teeth grow back, it’s not like it will grow back quickly enough to solve the immediate issue. It could have broken off due to having teeth issues to begin with or an accident of some sort, (and if that is the case, then it would be good for the vet to check the jaw), but if he can’t eat like he did, then that can cause some serious digestive issues as he needs to be able to consume enough fiber to keep his gut healthy. Also, you don’t want to have an infection set in. If he is in pain, this can also cause him to stop eating as much. All could be cause serious consequences. Can you borrow from family or friends? I would also call your vet and let them know the situation and ask if you could do a payment plan. Somehow though, this bunny really should be seen by a vet. I know that’s not the answer you were hoping for, and it’s not meant to be callous to your financial situation. It’s just that if the vet is the answer, then that’s really what needs to be done somehow…someway. I wish I could give you another answer that would make it easier, but I don’t.

thank you guys so much. upon further examination and comparing his teeth to his brothers, the short tooth that i did see is the size his other tooth should be, so it appears that his teeth are a little over grown (which should have been noticed by the vet when i took both of my rabbits to get fixed last week) and I have made an appointment for monday morning to get this issue fixed with another vet Thank you guys so much again

Yay! That’s great news. How is he doing right now? If he’s unable to eat, you may need to syringe feed him a pellet/water mixture or critical care. But of course, be sure you know how to do this, as you don’t want him to aspirate.

well in order to give him his treats i’ve been cutting them up in small pieces so its easier for him to chew, but he still hasn’t really been touching his hay.. and he’s been eating his pellets every day which is good, and in good amounts, although it’s a little hard for him to chew. but the appointment is tomorrow morning at 10 so I will let you guys know how he makes out with it

Hoops is doing great and has been non stop eating his hay with the way his teeth have been growing, and the fact the he’s only 4 and a half months old means that he will most likely need to go regularly to get his teeth clipped. He has an under bite, which means its harder for him to get his teeth shaved down himself from chewing on things. I am just so happy it is nothing serious I am going to go out and buy more things for him to chew on anyway because any little difference it can make for him will be great thank you guys again

My Nermal Nomnoms is in a cage on her own and there aren’t as many chewables in there as the main bungalow so I buy her hanging parrot toys and she loves them. Prices vary from about $6 to $60 so it pays to look at all the price tags as two almost identical ones can vary by $30 in value depending on the brand. Because they are designed to be chewed they are non toxic and coloured with vegetable dyes.

This is Madam Nomnoms with her first one which has now been gnawed down to a single strand. I bought her a new one a few weeks ago which is a giant ring of coloured shaped. She likes to line it up with the plantform and leap through it. I’ll need another one soon though as it has been chewed thoroughly.
