I can’t even believe that this happened.
I’ve had Briar for roughly seven years, she was my first rabbit. Recently she lost her partner of most of those seven years due to an abscess we fought and ultimately lost to. She quieted down, wasn’t as active for a few months but really started to perk up especially in the new year. I have been trying here or there to bond her to one of my new rabbits, Oliver, who was neutered and recovered and ready to go. They were even making some decent progress (sleeping side-by-side at night and able to spend a good 40 minutes to an hour together in a neutral location before some minor squabbles).
Last night I gave them their vegetables as usual, and not super uncommon, Briar didn’t immediately get up to devour them. I gave her a sprig of cilantro, which she took and ate and thought nothing of it. I came back an hour or so later and she hadn’t moved, again, not super uncommon. She’s had bouts of tummy trouble all of her life and I can usually spot the signs. I looked her over and it definitely wasn’t the usual tummy trouble. But she was still pooping and still angry about being picked up and was still eating so I was certain it was something that could wait until morning.
Well, fast forward another hour and things deteriorated. I was 100% certain she was dying. I gave her some of her favourite foods, which she still gobbled up and said my goodbyes and she was gone not too long after that.
I just wish I knew what happened. I was still trying to bond her with Oliver just the day before and there were no signs there was anything wrong. She was still tearing up her boxes, and eating like a pig and hanging out by Oliver’s cage until she just wasn’t anymore and then she was gone.
