Breed Type

Hi I am new to rabbit. Recently my husband brought home two seven week old rabbits. Both are girls and I was told they where litter mates. A friend that he works with got (from Craigslist) them as a gift for his kids but his daughter was allergic. I have guinea pigs and loads of cubes so I set up a C&C cage for them and have been doing research on how to care for them. I’ve realized while studding up that I have possibly two different breeds of rabbits but can’t really figure out what breed they are. Please help me so I can give my new family members the best space and care possible.

Kaylee is the cream colored one and you can’t really see it in the pictures but she has almost colorless eyes with red pupils.

Hermione is the brown one with those big beautiful ears.

Oh how adorable!  It must be fun watching these 2.

At 7 weeks, it’s a bit hard to say what breed they are. Nothing stands out yet. You’ll probably get a better idea once they reach their full weight and adult body form. You might even see their ears lop yet.  Colouration and markings can get us thinking they are one particular breed when that is not actually what they are. You can see certain colours and patterns across a range of breeds. To add the the confusion, there are colour names that are also rabbit breed names (for example, chinchilla, harliquin, silver marten). Kaylee having ruby eyes, I’d say her colour is called Himayalan. But she is not necessarily that breed.

You will see their colour change quite a bit I expect. They both have some shading evident. Kaylee may look a bit like RabbitPam’s Spike as she gets older. He also has that adorable light patch on his nose like Kaylee. 

Hermione looks like her colour is sooty fawn or a torte colouring. I’d say the dark on her nose will eventually cover most of her face and her ears and feet will become darker. It is so cute when they only have that dark smudge on the nose when they’re babies. 

I do encourage you to have a vet check their sexes for you. All to often people end up with a male and female and then a litter of babies. At 7 weeks old, this is not an issue just yet.

They look like they could be siblings. Jersey is right, coloring doesn’t have much to do with breed. And their coloring will likely evolve as they get older.

Thank you both so much for replying! Its going to be really cool watching their fur change! Oh and Jerseygirl don’t worry my husband and I have already scheduled an appointment with my guinea pigs vet. We where planning on going ahead and getting them fixed because i KNOW I won’t be able to handle a pregnant rabbit…lol.
