        Hey all,

I have been thinking about getting a house bunny for about a year now and hoping for some input. I know that all buns have differing personaltities, etc.  But anyone have a preference as to which breeds are prone to be more “cuddley” and which tend to be more aloof. I know there are variations of course, but like dogs, I have a feelig some breeds are known for some of those characterisitcs more than ever as a generalization…

Any input would be great. I’m not in a huge hurry because I’m waiting to find the bun that fits my situation best so we are a good fit!

        Thanks!

supposedly, netherland dwarfs are supposed to be aloof, but mine isn’t.

i would go to a shelter and meet the bunnies and see who responds the best to you and adopt that one! regardless of breed.

I agree…. go meet some bunnies and you will surely fall in love with one (or many). Its the best feeling helping out a bunny in need. I am sure that there are some in a shelter near you that you would just love to bits!!

People tend to feel French Lops are mellow and cuddly.    However there are a few who are quite fussy  and obnoxious too.

Checking out a shelter or foster   you can find out more of their personality that way.  Also an adult is already set in it’s personality so you can see what you are getting so to speak.

Tho a bun may act different once you get it home but their should not be a big difference.

Welcome! There are supposed differences but as you have said – personality factors into it. Plus age and personal history of the rabbit. One generalisation is the bigger bunnies are more the lap style bunnies and the smaller are more skittish. This is often dispproven though. Also I’ve heard Mini and Holland lops are pegged as good house bunnies.

Young bunnies can be sweet and cuddly but very soon puberty arrives and people are left disappointed. Puberty does end but the adult bunny may not be like it was as a baby.

I would really encourage you to visit a rabbit rescue where you can meet many adult rabbits (breed aside) whose personalities have been assessed.

I have a Netherland Dwarf also, and she was pretty snooty when I first got her, but after handling her a lot and giving her lot of attention, we really have bonded and she is very sweet.

like other animals they don’t always conform to rules

Have to put in that lionheads are easy to hold and kind of slow -TBH an easy starter breed becaue they are easy to handle and easy going

i think that the only factor that makes a difference (other than age) is size. The bigger the bun, the less active it generally is. The smaller ones need more exercise space and time, whereas my flemish giant, even though she’s a baby, doesn’t do much running around and prefers to eat and sleep all day. 😛

Another thing to think about when choosing a breed is that some breeds tend to have specific medical problems (like teeth issues) later on in life. So this may be something to consider when choosing you bunny if there are many that you like. I think above all personality is the number on thing you should use to decide!! Even though little baby bunnies are adorable sometimes its easier to tell how a bunny will behave if you spend some time with an adult before bringing them home. Oh and one other thing…. adult bunnies are usually spayed/neutered already (or will be done before you bring them home) so this is something that you wont have to worry about later on, where as with a baby you would. I had to have both my boys neutered and it wasnt a big deal… just another expense to think about! Have fun searching for your little guy… and keep us updated as to who you choose!!!

Well we have the giant breed and he will be cuddled and petted until you get bored even if that means hours! So as a generalism I would agree with the bigger bunny less active/more lazy theory.
