Hello BinkyBunny Crew!  I’ve been popping in for a few months and have learnt so much. Fantastic site!  I laugh at how similar many of us seem….must be common link of having been ‘taken in’ by those lil fur balls!

I have a  7 month old fawn and white English spot mix / I think with a mini breed.  She was about a pound when I got her at 8-10wks of age. (That’s 500grams for us Aussies!)  She grew to 3 lbs (1.5kg) over 3 months and I had her spayed about this time.  Her weight seemed to stay this so I thought she’d finished growing.  It’s now been almost 2 months since her spay and she has just put on another pound.  Would the spay and its effects on hormones affect her weight?

As I don’t know her exact breed, i’m not sure how big she’ll be.  I’ll try post some pics and would love some help identifying the mix.  She seems healthy, has oat hay, limited pellets and greens.  Plus gets plenty of exercise with free range about the house and time outside 70% of the time!

To summarise, I guess I’m asking does a 4lb rabbit sound like a mini breed cross and how big would I expect her to grow? What age do they become adults? 7 months? Any help appreciated!

Hey welcome to BB, it’s good to hear from another Aussie. We would love to see some pics of your bunny. I have had 7 rabbits spayed/neutered and none of mine have gained weight. You will have to tell us all about yourself, we have a thread going in the lounge with that question.

i’m not familiar with the average sizes of the English Spot, but go ahead and post some pics, so when someone more knowledgable than i comes along they can help you out.
            welcome here!

hey there!  yes, post pics of your lil fur baby please   she sounds so teeny tiny & must be impossibly cute

when my vet was discussing spaying my newest addition pinky (i adopted her at 10 months old) she explained that spaying before they’re 1 year old is the best.  apparently by about 1 year old buns develope more fat around their girlie bits to insulate & protect them which also makes it trickier to spay.  i know your bun is already spayed, but i mention this because it seems to me that this *may* explain some weight gain up until 1 year of age.  i def do not think that a spay would cause a weight gain though.   are buns about full size at a year?   i think so but some body correct me if i’m wrong.

i think it may be difficult to tell when your bun has stopped growing & so to check if she’s the proper weight whatever her size may be i’d try what my vet suggested.  my vet feels along my buns sides from head to bum and if she finds their belly bulging even the slightest bit behind their ribs then she says they need to loose a bit of weight.  probably not that likely on a bun so wee & young.  if you feel that the belly is level with the ribs or even slightly indented then your bun is around a  healthy weight.  if you can feel a bumpy spine then your bun may be under-weight.  i think weight is important for their over-all health so it may be worth a vet check if you have any concerns or to establish where your bun should be at.

my bun (mini rex) lost a half pound a few months after her spay and then she gained it back. they may fluctuate a bit. she is now about 13 months… and i believe she’s full-grown at just over 3.5 pounds. the most important thing is following the diet recommendations to the letter, which it sounds like you are doing.

now if only i could get my hubby to stop sneaking her treats behind my back… lol…

                  Welcome to BB!!

I would think she shouldn’t get too much bigger, and she does sound like a small breed. My Rupert is a large breed and he’s about eight pounds, while my other two are dwarf breeds (well not true dwars but small) and are both under three pounds.

English Spots are a large breed of rabbit.

Hard to say about if she will gain weight or not or get larger at this point. She is still young.

OK, so  I  began this thread under name “K” but have done some tweaking…I’m actually on the member list as “jerseygirl”.

Thanks everyone for the welcome! I fially have some pics of Jersey.  I only refer to her as an english spot mix due to her markings. Pure guess work!!  She has rex style ears but not the coat.  Plus she seems to have settled at 4lbs and is quite smallish.  Perhaps she’s got a variety of breeds in her mix…

Hope the pics up load ok.  Second one is from today.  Is burrowing really work for female bunnies or is it really just a luxurious mud bath at the day spa?!!!!!!!!!

OMG!  How cute is she all sprawled out in the dirt?!  She looks like a digger!  In the wild, it is the females who do most of the digging.  Check out this youtube clip of a bunny who looooooooves to dig!

I see a bit of English Spot, and a mix of something else but I can’t put my finger on it – dutch maybe?  She’s gorgeous!  I’d say by one year you will know what he top weigh is – I will guess she will hover around 5 pounds….

                          Welcome to Binky Bunny!
