Ok. I have two male Holland Lops who are brothers and have never been apart from each other. They are 5 months old tomorrow. They have been humping each other a ton, which I know is normal. But now one is thumping one hind foot super loud all night while they chase each other. It woke me up for the first time. They are out in my room during the day but in a large cage while I sleep. They usually sleep cuddled together most of the night. But now its super loud thumping. I’m worried that he is angry with the other or being hurt. I would hate to separate them, but I don’t know what to do. He isn’t making noises. Just one thump that shakes the whole cage every few minutes while they chase each other. There has been a lot of fur in the cage and on the carpet this past month and I assumed it was time to shed for them. They groom each other and I cant tell if they are pulling each others fur out or if this is normal stuff. Please help!

        Thanks so much!!!

          Hi there, welcome

Your boys have hit puberty and it’s time to separate them until they are neutered. The chasing is aggressive, and I’m guessing the fur is from scuffling. Grooming doesn’t leave fur clumps. Humping a ton is not super normal (some is OK, but a lot indicates their relationship is unsettled).

Unfortunately this is a common scenario. Babies get along but don’t truly bond, then hormones kick in and things can turn aggressive quickly. So, separate now, get them both neutered, then you can work on bonding them once they are healed. Better to separate asap before they truly fight. It would be good to check them over for injuries now, just in case.

I know how hard it is to see them snuggling and thinking about having to separate them but I agree this really needs to be done immediately. It is far too dangerous to keep them together at this point. I do hope that their genders were established with 100% accuracy.

Good luck with bonding when they are ready!

Thank you. I was afraid of that but want them to be healthy and safe. I truly appreciate the advice!!
