So, We now have Jackson – freshly neutered last Friday. He is recovering beautifully – saw a few binkies yesterday and a TON of binkies this morning.

But whoooo-weeee. His litter smells a ton worse than Coco’s ever did. Not like he has an infection but Musky – I clean his  littler everyday – but I am telling you, I would have never believed the difference between the two buns.

Please tell me this dies down as he decreases in hormones?

I don’t know if it does, it should, but my boy bunny’s pee is still more smelly than my girls,(but maybe its because he drinks and pees a lot more than her.)

Hmm, I’d assume the smell goes away a while after neutering; my neutered male’s pee only smells very mild after the first few minutes, as long as it’s in the litterbox. (I use pine pellet litter, it controls the odor very very well)

Thats my hope – We use the Yesterdays News – and Coco’s litter almost never smells – sure, a little bit, but not like Jacksons.
I am going with my Hormone theory. That his urine will be less pungent when his hormones die down. He is still doing the “I love you” honking to everyone who walks into the room.

And if he sees Coco out in the hall? He kind of has the same look that Jack had for Vivian in the early videos!

My Max was neutered for well over a year when we adopted him, and I’ve never really noticed any kind of smell with him (except at first b/c he was a bit dirty from being allowed to play outside.) I’m guessing it’s just b/c he is fresh from his neuter, but I’m sure even some neutered buns may have some level of smell. It probably just varies from bun to bun. You may want to look into something that controls the odor better, I don’t think YNews really covers up much or change the boxes more frequently. With a second bun, you’ll probably want to start looking for something more economical anyways, a pelletted pine litter or woodstove pellets/horse bedding is good for that.

Remember, our own hormones can sharpen our sense of smell too. ;o)

Since he was neutered just recently, it will take about a month or so for his hormones to die down, so that may be part of it. Also, Jack gets smelly when he needs his anal glands cleaned. Him being a dominant honker bun, he loves to leave scents on things from both ends, and the oils build up in the anal glands. Yuuck. A while back, member, Osprey suggested Aspen supreme pelleted litter. Something about the Aspen is supposed to really absorb the odor, not just mask it with wood smell. So I thought I’d give it a try, part of me thinking just another marketing technique, but I really have found it works best for us.

I like the Aspen too.   I switched to Carefresh due to Cottons lip.   Works ok and doesn’t make as big a mess sticking to their hair.

Ruby smells more than Cotton.   And she is spayed.   I would say is the hormones.  In about 2 months it should be a lot better.

Yes Cotton is like your boy and Jack in that he likes to leave his scent all over.  Especially on me.  A Cotton scented poop.  lol.  I also noticed that his anals get dirtier when he does that too

I had found a litter at super pets that absorbs the ammonia in the urine. I actually tested it out with ammonia cleaner and I couldn’t smell the ammonia at all. Unfortunatly I can’t remember then name of it. It comes in a carboard milk thing. Like the old milk containers that you have to push back and pull forward to open. I hope you guys know what I mean.

Also, I found this product that is supposed to absorb the ammonia in the body. You put it in the animals water and it is supposed to make the pee not stink. I’m not sure how safe this product it, but I’m curious about how it works.

I searched some for Aspen pelleted yesterday and came up empty.

BUT, his smelliness is decreasing. I am sure it was hormones, for sure. I do think his anal glands needs some work, but he is still skittish with me, and doesn’t like me to move too fast towards him. I spend alot of time trying to look at his sutures while I get him to stand for a papaya tablet. We have a vet appt for him to start a file and just have a check over by my vet on Thursday – I’ll have them tackle the glands and nails then in order to save my still emerging trust bond.

What I did have was some shredded aspen – So I am sprinkling that under the Yesterdays News, and it does seem to control the odor better – Plus he urinates SO MUCH MORE than Coco. He drinks three times the water she does, so the output is naturally higher. But the aspen definitely helped

i tried aspen supreme and it was aaaaawful for me and max- i hope it works better for yall!! haha.

max doesn’t really smell. it died down quickly after his neuter. penny is too young to be spayed and i only notice her odor when i’m changing the litter box.

uh, oh. I’m sorry Katie you had a bad experience with Aspen Supreme. For the last few months they have been going through a pellet problem (the pellets were too large and crumbly and didn’t do as well with odor). They have resolved the problem but some of the stores may carry the temporary kind as some may be still left in their inventory (The temporary bags that are like this have a white label on them that say “Temporary pellet change”. It was a noticable difference and I stopped using it until I they got the pellet back to normal.

                              What happened for you?

i think i did have the temporary one! it just kind of exploded when max peed on it- didn’t absorb the urine so it was like an aspen urine soup

i tried it in june, when i first got maxie. i’m sure its resolved by now, but i love the yesterdays news/generic pelleted paper max and penny like it too, so i’m just going to thank my lucky stars that we (max penny and i) all agree on a litter haha!!
