I never thought to look into this, but I saw Azerane’s lovely bird munching on bottlebrush foliage on Insta… so thought I would ask!

Anyone know if bottlebrush twigs are safe for buns to chew? I found that the flowers are listed as toxic, so I’m inclined not to mess with it, but if the twigs are safe that sure would be convenient, as they are planted all up and down my street!

I googled it, it says non-toxic to cats and dogs and horses.

It’s not a plant that exists here so I’ve never seen it. Looks very pretty though. Non-toxic to horses sounds good because they’re hind gut fermenters just like buns. It’s only 6 in the morning in Adelaide so Azerane is probably still in bed but she can probably say

Thanks! It is gorgeous when in bloom, and always full of humming birds

              Here I am

The only information I have regarding bottlebrush and buns is from the Rabbit Sanctuary (the largest rabbit rescue in Australia). I’m told by the owner they have often provided bottle brush branches (I think with leaves) to their rabbits with no problems for several years. The thick bark would be good for chewing I think

I would certainly trust them as a reliable source, plus as Bam said, non-toxic to horses is usually a good starting point I haven’t ever tried to myself, there’s lots around the streets but I can just go around lopping off big branches of street trees in the middle of the suburbs, lol. Wish we had several ourselves.

                Great, thanks!

Hahah mine are on my street… but they prune them regularly so I doubt they would miss a few twigs here and there.
