well, i took both bunnies to get neutered this morning. the dr said they did very good. they are home now and just sitting in their pen. I feel so bad for them. i got to see the incision and i just felt so sorry for them. i am glad that its over now and im glad they got it done. i was wondering how long it will bother them. like, when will they be back to their normal selves? since they are in a pen now with more room and only one level im thinking of just keeping them in there but i wasnt sure how long they should stay in. is it 2 or 3 days? also they told me to check the incision everyday but im scared to pick them up or handle them. im even nervous to give them their meds. i dont want to hurt them. charlie is simple to give meds to, but jack, omg he is a wild one! any tips for looking at the incision? is it necessary to check it every day if they seem to be fine? they have eaten a little. anything i should be looking for or any advice? thanks!

What I did with Monkey to check her stitches was make her stand on her hind feet and stretch to get her raisins. Then I could bend down and look at her tummy without having to pick her up. I’m sure she appreciated it Did the vet give you metacam for them? If so, buns go nuts for the stuff. Monkey danced for it like her raisins! I didn’t need to pick her up or anything to give it to her, she came running for it and just sat nice on the floor for it. It won’t take the boys long to get back to normal, I’d say by tonite or tomorrow they should be moving around more normally. Keep them in the pen for at least 3 days, just to make sure they don’t over exert themselves. They recommend longer, but I found Monkey would do her damndest to tug ont he pen after that, so it was in her best interest to let her out after that! The tugging on the pen would have hurt her more than running around would have

the vet gave them meloxicam. charlie did ok with it. jack was a wild animal! i ended up having to wrap him in a blanket. it was still hard to give it to him even when he was all wrapped up. he wanted nothing to do with a syringe!! i finally got the meds into him. he must have tranced. he closed his eyes and just stayed still except for when the syringe would touch his mouth he would jerk. he even gritted his teeth a few times. that made me so sad. poor little guy :o( he also wouldnt touch any cranberries!! i couldnt believe it. charlie ate jacks treats. jack seems to be doing better now. he must have really needed that dose of pain meds. he has eaten some food but not much. i’ve left veggies, pellets and hay in their pen and i keep checking them. they seem to be ok to stay in their pen. since they have a lot more room now they dont rattle on the bars. when i have let them out the last few days they go back in their pen a lot. this must mean they like it!! (i made it a few days ago) thanks for the help monkey!

Griff hated me checking his incision- it took my hubby to hold him- and to me to hold his back feet and try to get a peek otherwise he would kick out and he has long, powerful legs.

He disliked the Metacam- which is odd really- i offered the syringe- he got some on his nose and he snorted, sneezed and was grumpy.  So since he was used to Oxbow barley biscuits- I let the Metacam soak into one- and he ate it no problem- and no more nose rubbing and acting funny.  He did it twice- so that prompted me to try the treat methold.

also they told me to check the incision everyday but im scared to pick them up or handle them. im even nervous to give them their meds.

I can TOTALLY relate-injuries and blood in humans are fine to me but in animals make me wince big time. I was SO scared to check Kahlua’s incision or hurt her -oi

So actually the first two days I made Dave look at it until I was comfortable looking (he told me it was fine-then I could look.

so I had Kahlua on the ground, and just sort of supported her so she wouldn’t run off, put her two front legs in my hand and slowly lifted her up. Meanwhile Dave was laying on the ground with a flashlight ready to get a quick peak while she was lifted. This worked PERFECT

Meds are-especially with a tricky bunny best given when their inbetween your legs-so sort of squat with your calves on the floor (does this make sense>?) and put bunny inbetween your legs facing out. Then just lean over (bunny is now contained on both sides by your legs-bottom by the floor and top from your chest-and I use two fingers to pull one lip back just a touch, use the other hand to stick the syringe in the mouth, just past the incisors-and squirt

The other thing you could do is while the bunny is on the ground, put a towel over him and sort of tuck it around so he can’t back up or up or sideways and then give them that way

I’d post a youtube vid for you, but they blocked youtube at work But there are videos on youtube that show how to If it’s metacam its pretty yummy (usually honey flavored) so once they know what it tastes like your next doses are easiest.

Ooo, meds can be really tricky because bunnies are so squirmy. I was lucky that my boy actually liked the metacam. I just stuck it near his mouth and dripped it out slowly while he licked it off. I also had a gerbil who adored metacam and would come running for it. Haha. So maybe try giving it in a way that allows him to take it for himself (maybe giving it on a treat, or letting him lick it up). He might actually enjoy it.

As far as checking stitches, I am so bad at that … no advice from me! Haha. I was lucky to be able to check them once.

I’m glad they’re both home and feeling ok!

thanks everyone! kk thats how i give meds to charlie. his vet showed me and it was such a life saver. it takes seconds to give him meds. i was putting him on a table but realized its even more easier to do it on the floor the way that u are describing. its way harder to do it any kind of way with jack lol. i have given him meds twice now though. he will prob hate me for a while but its ok, i know he has to feel a ton better having those pain meds in him.

i am sooooo relieved that its over. i was so anxious and worried wondering if they would make it through surgery. today they are so much better. im glad i dont have to do this again. my bunny julia that i will be adopting has already been spayed thank god! i dont know how i could handle a spay. thanks for your support and ideas. its made me feel a lot better!
