So, we carved some pumpkins last night! Tried to give Boston a piece of the pumpkin and she did not like it! she sniffed and tasted it, but then actually ran to her cage to eat hay instead! haha!

We managed to get a good “family pic” out of it though!

The ghost’s are curtesy of my boyfriend. I did the cute little monster!

My first ever, by the way! I had never carved a pumpkin before!

I don’t understand pumpkin carving…explanation please if possible? I’ll google it

What a gorgeous family picture! How do you get Boston to stay still? If we tried that, all we’d have is two bunny tails as they hopped away!

You can read the wiki on Jack o’lanterns to get some background on why they’re done – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_o_lantern

It’s gradually moved from carving crude scary faces into the pumpkins to do more elaborate and creative designs. Some of them are the cut-through style, some are more of a scraping/shaving (that’s what I’m more fond of doing) and some combine both techniques.
Then if you really get into it you can get into sculpting, and colouring, and all kinds of really creative things.

Can someone put a link to ScooterandAnnette’s? I’d love to see!

If you look close, there are some pellets in front of Boston–keeping her there! Normally, if we just pet her, she will eventually lay still, but it was dark in the apartment and she was intigued by the light of the camera, so we tempted her with food! The first pic we took is a close up of Boston cuz she took off running toward the camera right as the pic took.

(took the pics on a self timer, so the camera was sitting on the floor!)

I’ll have to put them up on something other than photobucket so that they’re a little more accessible.

In the meantime here’s 2 more  – The first sett is from the first year I tried the shading technique.  The second one is from last year.

BTW I don’t *think*  I’m going to be trying anything quite that impressive this year.  But we’ll see.  I’ve got 6 pumpkins to do so….

I really don’t think I could do the shading/shaving type of carving! The skin is too thick and lumpy. I lack the patience and control!

I actually fnd it easier than the cut-out technique! With the cut-out I’m always accidently cutting off parts that I want to keep and end up with a bunch of toothpicks stuck into it trying to hold pieces on or together.

I started out with a kit that I found in store – I can’t see it online but I’ll dig it out soon and see who makes it. It had a few really great tools for doing the shading including a little V cutter for doing the edges/cutting through the skin and one for scraping off areas for shading. I just bought a nice woodcarving set (thank you 50% off coupons for Michael’s!) that will make it much easier. But it’s pretty much just like colouring – you put the pattern on, go around the edges, and then fill in the rest!

Some people go really extreme with their pumpkins – you should see the ones this guy does!  villafanestudios.com/pumpkins.htm

Wow those pumpkins are amazing! I’m going to buy a couple tomorrow – yea. I might have to hit Michale’s (craft store) too!

Allenj1 – love the pellets in front of Boston – great idea.

I bet the pumkins last longer when you shade rather than carve?
