hi there! i have a 4 month old holland/mini lop. he’s a sweet boy who LOVES being let out of his cage. he is pretty energetic and will hop and run around. problem is, he seems to be getting really bored. he doesn’t have a companion, but i feel if i get him a friend he won’t be as affectionate towards me. because he is SO affectionate. loves being petted and comes up to the bars when i walk in the room. anyways, he has a large cage but on top of that i bought him a large playpen for medium-large sized dogs and have a large portion of my room sectioned off. he has free run of that large area and of course 24/7 access to his cage. he has all sorts of toys such as blocks, a castle, a wooden bridge, push toys, chew toys, toss toys, puzzle toys, balls, and i even got a huge cardboard box and cut windows in it, but his blanket in it, bought a big cardboard tube for him to run in and out of, and make a haybale attached to his little playhouse. he still seems bored though, because obviously i’m not in my room ALL the time. but i do leave the door open and my cats will stop in and say hi sometimes, and while i’m at school my mom and 2 year old brother (who nutmeg loves by the way!) go in and hangout with him for a little. i’ve been agonizing over what i can do with him, and i’ve been looking up ideas of stuff to do with him but nothing seems to entertain him! the only time he is seriously entertained is when he gets a new toy (he has SO MANY, and yes i do rotate them), when im sitting in his pen with him, or when i let him have free run of my room. i was thinking maybe bunny-proofing a higher traffic area of my house downstairs and penning that off so he has a change of scenery? or it just snowed here (i live in pittsburgh) so i thought maybe i could take his pen outside and let him romp around in the snow for a bit. that just worries me because although my room is very drafty (atleast 5-10 degrees cooler than the rest of my house) im afraid it’ll be too cold for him. does anyone have any ideas on how to entertain him? like some fun activities he and i can do together? he doesnt seem to understand the concept of chase with me. but ideas and opinions on some of my ideas would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

           this is his current setup!

The area looks nice – perhaps some willow toys would get him interested, but why do you think he is bored? Bunnies sleep a lot during the day, their most active times are dusk and dawn, so loafing around or just kind of sitting around is just a content relaxed bunny. My two spend 90% of their day just laying around, even though they have run of the house all day and all the toys I can get my hands on for them. They do zoomies once or twice a day and a few binkies, but mainly it’s just double loafs.

For the snow, you could take a clean litter box and bring some INSIDE for him – he might like playing in it and then you don’t have to worry about him cold outside. As long as your room is over 50F he shouldn’t get too cold playing in it.

A sign of boredom is extreme destruction.
My Chacha bun has been a single girl for over 2 years, since I got her when she was a baby bunny. She shows no sign of boredom – her hobbies include bossing the slaves around on a daily basis, hiding, sleeping most of the time, and nose bonking me in the butt.

I was on vacation last week for 5 days. Chacha didn’t seem to like that since she sleeps during the morning all the way til about 7-9 pm at night. Mommy kept saying ‘Hello’ or taking photos of her. Bunnies do indeed sleep a lot during the day so I don’t think it is anything to worry about.

4 months of age is still quite young. Your bond with him will grow a lot
