Booster Vaccines

Hi,

a quick question, do any of you know whether bunnies can have their booster vaccinations before their due date?

One of our buns is due her booster on the 14th. I tried to email the vet today to book her in for next week 8th Feb, but I received a fairly rude response which didn’t help at all. This isn’t our normal vet clinic but due to the new National UK lockdown, we’re unable to travel to our vet.

Anyway, I tried to email them again but was met with another response which simply stated ‘Your rabbit is not due for its booster until the 14th. We can’t do it before then.’ no hello, no name sign off, didn’t even offer me a time to book her in for, honestly didn’t seem professional at all. Our other bunny received her booster 5 days before it was due. Which is why I’m now curious as to whether what they said was even true or whether they just couldn’t be bothered with me. We have used this practice before but we had been disappointed and sent in a complaint. Unfortunately, they’re the only ‘exotic’ vet in the area- although I don’t think they even have the credentials to call themselves that.

Obviously it’s not a problem, I can wait if need be, but I have next week off so I’m a bit more flexible and can keep a better eye on her as she tends to suffer from some side-effects from the boosters. They’ve never been severe but it gives me a piece of mind if I can observe her more closely.

I doubt 2 weeks in advance would cause trouble. It is after all recommended that you get your bun an extra booster if there is an outbreak near you.

I have however heard about vets in Britain refusing to vaccinate before the booster is due, but I dont know the reason. Several other vaccines for pets are nowadays given with longer intervals than used to be recommended say 10 years ago. With rabbit vaccines, it doesnt seem like there is good evidence for a protective effect that lasts beyond 12 months.

I know you’re not asking this, but if you are getting the new Nobivac Myxo-RHD Plus vaccine, and you bun previously have had Nobivac Myxo-RHD but NOT Filavac or Eravac (against RVHD2), your bun needs to get both the Myxo-RHD Plus-vaccine and an RVHD2- vaccine. The RVHD2 vaccine should be given 2 weeks before the Myxo-RHD plus. Thank you! I’ll contact some other clinics in the area and see what they think. Might even call up my vet for his opinion on the matter.

And thanks so much, fortunately she was vaccinated for Myxo-RHD last Feb and received the RHVD2 vaccine in May so she should be suitable for the dual shot. We’ll see what they think, they might decide to keep her on the separate vaccinations due to her being side effect prone. Fingers crossed we’ll find out soon!

My bun had also had the RVHD2 as well as the Myxo-RHD, so he was good to go with the Myxo-RHD Plus last fall. He isnt side effect prone, but he is 8 years old.
