Okay, I am going to have to shut down after I post this…but I just had a HUGE clap of thunder go overhead here and I can’t believe how, at 45 years old, it still scares the living crud out of me!

Anyone here afraid of thunder and/or lightning?

I’ll check back later! *runs and hides under a blanket*

I LOVE thunder and lightning storms! I think they are cool to watch – so long as you are not walking in or driving around in one!

We had a power outage on Saturday night – just our townhouse complex – just as a lightning storm began. Hubby and I had ordered chinese and it arrived just as the big plops of rain began to fall. We ate by candlelight – which you would think would be romantic but it was kind of annoying not being able to see what you’re eating. Then we just sat around and said “What do we do now? Are we supposed to chat all night?!”

We turned in at about 11pm and just as I shut the flashlight off – PING! All the lights came back on…

I love lightening storms as well. We get power surges…just enough to shut the computers down and make all the things that you have to program with the time and do not have battery back up start blinking.

I refuse to reprogram the vcr, stove clock, microwave clock or customize the voice mail message 20 times in a week.

my dog shares your sentiment… lol.  actually i startle easily and forces of nature freak me out too but during loud storms i’m usually focused on comforting my dog.  he gets very very upset so i have to be super normal and cheerful and keep him as distracted as possible.  meanwhile the buns take no notice.

Florida is like the lightening capital of the world. When there’s a storm here, the weather guy shows hundreds of strikes with little dots on the map.

I like watching the storms from inside, but the lightening frightens me if I have to be outside. (Like running from my car to the front door.)

BTW, if you’re inside you’re car, you’re in one of the safest places you can be. Cars are grounded. (My Dad tells me these things.) Do you guys do the counting thing to see how far away the storm really is? You see a flash of lightening, then count the seconds before you hear the thunder. (one-mississippi, two-mississippi…) More seconds, farther away. No seconds –

yes i have although i never understood how that worked, if you stood right under the lightening and heard the thunder right after, how can it be longer further away surely it would still happen at the same time so you would still here it at the same time? eeekk brain freeze >.<

I’m guessing, but I think it’s because the speed of light is faster than the speed of sound. So if you see a zig zag, it took some seconds to get to your eyes from where it starts in the clouds. The boom starts out at the same time, but it took longer to get to you.
Scientists here – if I’m wrong, please be gentle.

I think it’s really hard to do the counting thing here because we live on the valley floor, so it echoes so quickly around us that you don’t have time to count. And even when it’s far away…well…me, I’m usually shivering under something during storms, so I just don’t bother…lolz.

When I was a kid I loved them. But honestly, the weather is getting so freaky here I just can’t stand them anymore. Plus I’m married to someone who used to like to sneak up on me and scare the curd out of me all the time. (He’s 6’2″ and you’d think I’d hear his feet coming!) Anyway, I just worry about all our electronics. They take a beating when the power goes down. Yes we get those surges, blew up a perfectly good Mitsubishi bigscreen t.v. years ago and we didn’t get reimbursed by the power company for it. Steamed MY broccoli, I can tell you!

And yes, my huge Mackenzie River Husky can’t stand thunder, or fireworks, or when the military drops ordinance around us in their training areas. He squeezes under our porch and whines, poor thing. I feel so sorry for him.
The bunnies don’t even notice it…unless I’m screaming during every thunderclap, then they get a little worried. ^_^

MM that’s so funny!!  Anyone that goofy can’t complain about a wife who loves rabbits!

Well his excuse was always, “You have to be aware of your surroundings and ready for anything!” Yeah…like a HEART ATTACK! *gasp, wheeze*

I also fear the storms because of lightning strikes. I loathe the idea of having to evac over a forest fire again. 2004 was a terrible year for them and a lot of them started with dry thunder.
