I’ve been going to the libary and getting books about rabbits. Do you all have any must read books? I’m learning so much but I want to learn more.
the house rabbit is a little book put out by house rabbit society I have heard of The Rabbit whisperere but never got it or seen it. supposed to be good too. tho I can’t say as I never have seen it in libraries is fairly new and at amazon.com
“The House Rabbit Handbook” is very good, I think this is the one bunnytowne was referring to. “Rabiits for Dummies” is OK, but very basic.
i liked the Dummies book b/c it was pretty straightforward and covered quite a few topics.
i read the House Rabbit Primer= http://www.amazon.com/House-Rabbit-Primer-Understanding-Companion/dp/1891661507
that book has some good info as well and the second half is a very informative health section.
I’ve also read the HRS book and liked it. most of the other ones i’ve read were too outdated and missed a lot of key things.
one i really liked was Stories Rabbits Tell= http://www.amazon.com/Stories-Rabbits-Tell-Cultural-Misunderstood/dp/1590560442/ref=pd_sim_b_img_4
it is a bit dry at parts, but it is still an absolute worthwhile read. it has sections on the rabbit industry that you would not believe.
the Rabbit Health in the 21stcentury comes very highly recommended, but i have not seen it personally.
you probably don’t mean fictional books, but “watership down” by richard adams is all about buns. i’m reading it for the very first time right now for my bookclub & i LOVE it so far. i think richard adams has really got rabbit behaviour to a tee and it’s funny to read how he imagines their communications.
Hmm the Rabbit for Dummies is pretty extensive and detailed. I personally like the Animal Planet books
they have at Petco, just titled Rabbits. However, I am finding that those books still have two sections, one
for indoor and outdoor buns. Personally…I don’t like the whole housing rabbits outside section because
I’d like for people to just raise their buns inside…but oh well. I saw an episode of Miami animal cops on
animal planet the other day, and there was a man who had like ten buns in hutches and two pitbulls went
into his backyard and tore the hutches apart and killed a bunch of them. It was horrible…
anyway….I
also like the Rabbit magazine available at Petco and Bookstores. They often say the same thing over and
over each year but it’s informative and good to look through.
I second Stories Rabbits Tell. It’s a bit more academic but if learning about rabbits is what you are after, it’s a facinating read. Some chapters are depressing (rabbit testing and the meat industry) but there is some unbelievable info in there as well.
For purely entertainment purposes, you can’t beat Watership Down.
I’ve never read any bunny books (besides Watership Down when I was 13 – have to read it again soon…). I find the most up to date info on bunnies here on the net.
but on the same note, you need to really watch the source. the majority of the info online is either wrong, outdated or both. if you go to the HRS website there are links to different HRS chapters. many of them have good info and articles that are interesting to read. the “ask boards” (i think answer.com and i saw another one as well) they have questions answered by users, and you never know who is saying what.
Yep – definately correct to watch your internet sources…there’s a lot of misinformation out there too.
What about Bunnicula? “Today, vegetables. Tomorrow … the world!”
There is actually a whole series of Bunnicula books. Big Fun!
the only rabbit book i have read is the rabbits for dummies book and its really good
I have read to HRS Hand Book very good. Rabit Premier is excellent. I’m getting Stories Rabbits Tell and the Essential Rabbit from the libary when they get them. They did’nt have Rabbits for Dumbies,Hop to It, Why Does My Rabbit or Watership Downs they did have the sequal. I got Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul. So far it’s sad.
I like “Rabbit Health in the 21st Century” by Kathy Smith
“A House Rabbit Primer” by Lucile Moore is pretty good too.
Since you’ve already mentioned my 2 fav. books, HR Handbook & Rabbits for Dummies,
I’d like to add my favorite baby book:
Pat the Bunny (hmmm. Maybe it was a fortune telling book about my future?)
I also like the Velveteen Rabbit, though first read it as an adult. Been meaning to read Watership Down. Are there any “bad” parts? (ie. sad, mean, deaths, etc.)
Watership Down does have “sad” parts but it’s written in such a grown-up manner, it’s really quite incredible to read. It’s like actually living in a warren with rabbits – they have their own language, beliefs and fables that they tell and the story is very serious, well-written and compassionate. It’s quite a page-turner!
I’m a huge Watership Down fan. I have the book, the movie, and the sequels to the movie (a series by a different producer), plus the sequel to the book and about a dozen plushies from the movie and series. That’s how sick I am. lolz.
Well now that you guys mentioned all those books I went and surfed Amazon and now I’ve got about twelve new books ordered and on the way…thank you very much! >.<
But what I can’t seem to find is a good book that shows photos of the breeds, kind of like how the AKC used to put out books on the dog breeds. (I’ve got an old one of those from the 50’s around here somewhere.)
I didn’t see any I liked from the reviews on them at Amazon. Does anyone know of a good rabbit breed book that has photos, not drawings, current breeds and info without dealing in the darker side of rabbit breeding? I’d just kind of like to see how many kinds there are and what they look like.
A little independent publication “Rabbit Health 101” LOVE IT! Of course “The House Rabbit Handbook” and “Rabbit Health in the 21st Century” are good and “Clicking with Your Rabbit.” It is hard to find many house rabbit books at a library as most of them are geared towards rabbit breeding. You can also help in a small way to help educate people is by asking your local library to order and carry the books too!
I’ve done that at every library near me and they were real happy to oblige! I was also happy that every time I went to that section, they have always been checked out!
MimzMum,
The bad news is that I haven’t seen any books on rabbit breeds, but there are breed websites that have excellent pictures.
There’s a pretty good list on Wikipedia; search by “rabbit breeds,” that has many pictures.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit_breeds
The descriptions are pretty thorough too. I found it when I was thinking of getting a different bun than an mini-rex next time. I couldn’t find any other sources with pictures and descriptions. Won’t decide until I meet the bunny that picks me.
lolz…Thanks Pam!
I’ll go check that linkie. ^_^
“the rabbit that picks me”…now isn’t that just what it really is all about? I love the way you put that. Reminds me of this piccy:
I love that bunny pix! I saved it to my desktop a couple of weeks ago when I saw it with other captions. I like your captions better.
BTW: nice drawings of your buns on your signature. Been meaning to tell you.
I loved A House Rabbit Primer And to the rest of you guys thanks for your suggestions. I will ask the libary to order some of these books.
The first book that really taught me about rabbits was “Rabbits for Dummies”. I bought this shortly after getting Stormy and learned so much. It’s very easy to read and even has pics. I’ve lent this to many people over the years.
Thanks Pam! ^_^ That’s not my caption on the bunny pic, I got that off cheezburger.com. My daughter and I constantly joke about it.
And thank you for the compliment on the drawing…that’s my daughter’s renditions of Mim & Pip. I only regret that my scanner really washed out the subtle colors on the bunnies, the originals really look much better. ^_^
