My bunny has taken a liking to my cat.  Only problem is, I’m at my parents place right now, with me.  I’m not going to be here in another month.  I’m moving in with my boyfriend, and he wants a puppy.  He’s got a house, so we’re completely prepared to give the bunny her own room like she has here.  We’re looking to adopt from the humane society, probably a smaller dog.  Any advice?  He’s got his heart set on a puppy, but he understands if we can’t.  I’m just really trying to figure out a way to make this work, but like I said, if it can’t, it can’t.  Help

One thing with dogs is that you don’t want to take a chance and leave them alone together unsupervised. Really it depends on the rabbit and the dog too as to how they will get along. Some dogs will become stressed with a rabbit in the house and vice-versa.

The link above has some good articles on dogs and rabbits that I would also recommend that you read.

I have dogs and rabbits and I just keep them in different rooms from each other, I would not trust them unsupervised together, seeing as my one dog gets excited very easily.

I lock the dogs up when i let the rabbit run around. My dog is small but gets easily excited. My kitten who is still smaller then both the rabbits seems to want to bond but I never leave the room with her in there.

A dog or cat could become friends with a bunny- but it is unlikely to ever truly be like the bond between 2 rabbits.  The natural language and behavior are just so different.

If you do go ahead and get a puppy, I would suggest researching breeds of dogs first. The advice above it very good (I personally wouldn’t do it), and you can increase the possibility of a better relationship by being careful who you select. Some breeds are calmer in general, some are calmer around other animals. Some are bred to be hunters (so never get a beagle, for example) and rabbits are prey animals. If you look around at the families here that have both, there are certain dogs who are pretty gentle around the rabbits. Worth checking out.

I can definitely recommend a laponian shephard – no hunting instinct! Or a Keeshond as well! I have really been studing a lot to find a perfect breed should we add a dog to the family – don’t want no dead bunny!! Of course, I don’t know what you can offer a dog and that has to match as well, but look into these two breeds. Especially the keeshond is said to be really god with other animals.
